Ada

"So you two used to date?" James scratched his eyebrow.

"Yeah." Maggie smiled, her conspirational, mischievous smile that said anything was possible.

The same smile that had gotten them to places they shouldn't have gone to. On campus roof tops, in empty classes after midnight, in teacher's closed offices.

"We were together for a couple of years back at the university. She was my roommate, and I had this huge crush on her from the start." Maggie clarified.

"I can see why." James agreed with a little smile.

Ada took a much needed sip from her drink. "We were happy but it's over now. We're over."

Maggie sipped her own drink, still smiling. "Of course we are."

"You never said how you found us?" Jack asked Maggie, ever the practical detective.

She shrugged. "Listened to the town's gossip."

Ada frowned. "What were they saying?"

"That there was a hunter in town, hanging out with a vamp girl. I dug a little deeper and found out it was you two."

"What makes us such interesting subject to talk about?" James twirled his drink in the glass.

"These kind of relationships aren't that common. You should be careful, not everyone who might look for you is a friendly face."

Ada felt James tense beside her.

"Is that a threat?" Jack voiced their thoughts.

Maggie smiled. "A mere warning. I would never harm Ada in anyway."

"Thank you for stating the obvious. We really appriciate it." James said in a dry tone.

Ada saw a flash of thunder in the blue of Maggie's eyes. The cabin suddenly felt too small and claustrophobic.

"How about we stop beating around the bush and you tell us why you're really here?" Jack finalky asked the million dollor question.

Maggie pinched her lips. "Is it just me or has this conversation turned into a full on investigation?"

"That's just how he talks." Ada brushed it off.

Jack said. "Answer the question Maggie."

"That's not how you used to talk to me." She shot him a venomous look. "like I'm some common criminal."

He took a casual sip from his brandy. "People change."

"Are you saying I'm lying?"

"I don't know. Are you?" He answered in his calm voice.

"Fuck you Jack..."

"Been there. Done that..."

"You son of a..."

"Save your petty shit for later." Ada snapped. "we have more important things to talk about." The living room fell silent. They mumbled apologies. Ada directed her gaze at Maggie. "We both know you're not here just because you wanted to see us so what do you want Maggie?"

Her eyes said You. I want you back Brooks. Her lips said. "The cure of immortality."

Ada choked on her drink.

"That's absurd." Jack gave her an incredulous look.

"You can't be serious."
James was looking at her like she had lost her mind.
