Chapter 39: Penna Bellator

Sharp, frozen winds passed through snow filled ridges on the ice capped mountain. Blizzards were a common occurrence, the trees never grew their leaves. The nearby villages, small collections of wooden huts and cottages relied on one man to provide everything for them. His feathered, jet black body granted him protection from cold temperatures but it had never been this bad before. Unfortunately for him, most of Aurea didn't take kindly to people with mutation type quirks so no special clothing had been weaved for him. All he had was his feathers, a scarf, and a collection of tight sashes that covered the majority of his body. But that was not enough to protect him from frigid conditions.

"Not fast enough, not stable enough. Not skilled enough." His green eyes squinted. Four seconds passed, with nothing happening, and then he made his move. A strong updraft appeared from beneath him, lifting the snow off his feathers. His eyes squinted again to protect them from rising snow. His legs braced, kneeling down, and he jumped into the air. The current picked him up immediately and he rose into the sky. This was his way of making peace. Silence, beautiful silence.

Suddenly, his right leg pulled away from his body due to the strong wind currents, and he was thrown out of the whirlwind. Black feathers turned white again as he collapsed onto the white blanket.

"I'm still...not good enough." He felt his leg lodge back into place. A young child called to him from under the many layers of thick fur.

"Penna! Big brother!!" He shouted, smiling and waving. Penna sighed.

"I told you, I'm not your brother." He ruffled his feathers to release the snow, that soon came tumbling down on top of the young boy.

"I know but I want you to be my big brother!"

"Fine, fine." Penna shook his 'brother's' hair with feathers shaped like fingers (He doesn't have hands, only feathers, so he must make do with what he has and use them like a human would."

"Do your special trick!" He beamed excitedly.

"Alex, I haven't perfected it just yet."

"Aww c'mon, please?"

"If you insist." His feathers pointed towards the sky yet again, the updraft getting stronger and stronger with every exhale of breath. He crouched down, preparing for take-off. Talons propelled him into the air, and he spun rapidly as he moved up the spiral. Feathered arms spread out and flapped once. Then the very same thing happened. His left leg dislocated due to the sudden pull from the wind, and he tumbled towards the ground.

"Brother!!" The young boy shouted, Penna slamming into jagged rock.

"I...I'm fine." A horn blew, from the village. An attack.

"You remember the hiding place I showed you?" Penna asked, gripping his brother's shoulders.

"Mhm." A terrified voice replied.

"Go, I'll come back for you." Penna ran and then jumped, flapping his broad wings to take off.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Ahh!!" A family cried out for help. Criminals all around them, all covering their faces with hoods.
"Hyah!" Dozens of sharp feathers flew at them like daggers, hitting their legs and arms. Two claws hauled a grown man up from his shoulders and slammed him into the ground. As Penna ran towards the other monsters in sight he spun, sharpening his feathers with the wind. He sliced the chest of one, swiped at another's legs and flung two pitch black feathers at the last one. Almost as fast as Hawks, but not quite.
More hooded men turned the corner, almost catching Penna by surprise, but scarlet feathers knocked them out where they stood. Hawks turned the corner calmly.
"Is that all of them?" The hero asked and then scanned everyone for a feathered figure. "Hey, you're just like me!" Hawks shouted, his hand waving as his mouth opened to form a grin.
"I didn't need your help." Penna replied.
"Someone's in a bad mood-"
"Help!!" An extremely minor scream to any normal human, but to Hawks and Penna, it was as loud as a gunshot.
They both took off immediately, Hawks much faster than Aurea's winged hero.
"Alexio!" Penna shouted. By the time he'd got to the hiding place, Hawks was already there, a crimson blade in hand.
"You alright?" He asked the kid.
"Mhm, thanks."
"Why'd you help him? It's my responsibility to be there for him, not yours." Penna glared as Alex rushed over to him.
"Calm down. If I didn't fly off before you he might be dead already." Hawks  replied, slipping his feathered sword into his back.
"I hold myself responsible for everyone who has and will die so I will face the consequences when that happens." Alex climbed onto Penna's back and Penna was about to fly back to the village.
"Don't carry such a heavy burden by yourself."
"You don't know what I've been through. You don't know what it's like to lose someone close to you."
"Don't I?£ Hawks replied. Penna scoffed, turning his head and flying away.
'This one's gonna be difficult.' Hawks followed Penna back to the village.
Thanks for reading this chapter of Butterfly Kisses. I like Penna, one of my favourite ocs I think. I definitely won't be able to get to the end of season 4 (with Butterfly Kisses) before season 5 releases, since Class 1-A and Class 1-B are at their training camp in this chapter.
See ya!!
