"Mommy!" the young girl screams, running through the lit-up paths of her village. "Mama, where are you?" she yells, tears streaming down her face as she runs through the snow, pushing past a few grouped-up families, running for the woods. The young girl stops in her place, realizing how bad the situation was. Fire engulfed the wooden buildings, making it seem like daytime. The bright orange light illuminates her small frame and the iridescent snow as she hears the shriek of a frightened horse. 'The stables' she thinks, remembering her mother telling her she was getting them a horse to escape on.

She runs as fast as she can, the coldness of the snow biting at her bare feet. She turns to face the stable, where she could barely make out a silhouette of a person, grabbing the reins of a horse. She smiles, walking to the big stables to regroup with her mother. A loud creak forces her body to freeze.

It happened in slow motion. The roof of the flaming stables crashes down, painful screams are barely audible over the crackling of the burning spruce wood. Her eyes wide, the girl's tears spill down her cold pink cheeks. The girl knew not what to do. Nothing, but to run. Her home was one of the first ones to fall from the eating of the intense fire, so she had nowhere to return to. Her memories are as hazy as the smoldering air in the night, but she recalls back to the families who evacuated while she searched for her mother.

She turns around and jogs, her nightgown flowing behind her as she picks up pace. "W-wait for me!" she huffs, out of breath, reaching her hands out, searching for someone to grab in the increased darkness of the woods. Her feet, hands, and nose are numb, she can't feel the rocks and twigs poking at her feet or the low branches and leaves whipping her face and arms as she desperately searches. Her tears freeze on her face as she calls out once more.

She is far from her decimated village now. Her legs tremble from exhaustion. She barely feels as she collapses in the snow by a log. A harsh wind picks up but she can't help herself from crying. She sobs loudly into the void of the night sky and holds herself as she cries. The small girl leans against the log and clings to herself, eventually crying herself to sleep.
