Chapter 44

I sit on the sofa with my feet in a bucket of water as we all watch as Korra slowly wakes up from the tranquilizer. I sigh and lean my head against Bolin's shoulder. He turns to me slightly and he looks at me for a moment before wrapping his arm around my waist. I know he is annoyed at me because of the plan I came up with, but I think he understands why I did it. He wouldn't be holding me if he was angry at me. Aiwei walks into the room with a bottle of medicine for Korra and kneels down beside her.

"This should neutralize the Shirashu toxins." He says as he brings the bottle to the Avatar's lips. I purse my lips as we all watch it take affect. Slowly Korra starts to move again and I release the breath I was holding. She's okay.

"How could you let this happen?" Lin suddenly snaps at her sister from behind the sofa Korra is on. "You assured me this was one of the most secure places in the world."

"It is. I don't know how this happened. Obviously this was a well-planned operation, so don't blame me." Suyin scowls at her sister. Before they can get into a heated argument, one of Suyin's guards, Kuvira walks into the room gaining everyone's attention. Perfect timing.

"We searched the entire estate. But there's no sign of them." Kuvira says.

"Well, keep looking!" Lin snaps at the woman and Kuvira nods before quickly making her exit. I am forced to look away from them as my feet start to sting. I remove my head from Bolin's shoulder and focus on the bucket. I lift my hand slightly and start bending the heat out of the water making it cold once again. I know it's not the same as healing, but cold water against the burns numbs the pain.

"It would seem they had inside knowledge of Zaofu. They must have been working with someone." Aiwei says as I lean back. I notice Bolin's eyes are on me and I give him a small smile to reassure him that I'm okay. He lets his features soften for the first time since the attempted kidnapping and he brings me back to his side, allowing me to rest my head upon his shoulder like I had before.

"The-the guards." Korra says as she sits up. I watch her closely as she holds her head still waking up from the toxins Zaheer drugged her with. "It had to be one of them." She carries on.

"I agree." Aiwei nods and I notice anger strike Suyin's face. I haven't seen her grow this angry before.

"Question them all!" She demands. "Whoever betrayed my city will suffer the consequences!" She snaps and walks out of the room. Lin and Aiwei follow her out and Mako and Asami quickly stand up and rush to Korra's side. The Avatar moves her legs to the floor and lowers her hand to look up at them. I move out of Bo's touch and go to stand to join them, but I hiss in pain and I fall down again. Bo looks at me and sighs to himself before picking me up bridal style and taking me over to Korra's sofa.

"Thank you." I whisper to him and he gives me a small smile in return. He sits me down by Korra and then drops to one knee in front of me. I watch him curiously as he gently places my legs on his, acting as a footstool for me. He is honestly the most caring person I know and it makes me feel so incredibly happy to know that he has chosen me to be his girlfriend.

"How are you feeling?" Asami asks as she sits on the arm of the sofa so that she's next to Korra. Mako kneels down on the ground in front of the Avatar and next to his brother.

"Tired." She sighs. She looks up to us and smiles. "Thanks for stopping Zaheer."

"Hey, we're Team Avatar. We'll always have your back." Bolin says enthusiastically. Korra looks to him and frowns when she sees my feet.

"What happened?" She asks as she looks up to meet my eye.

"Learnt not to play with fire." I say with a small laugh. I don't want her to worry about me, she needs to take care of herself. She straightens her posture and looks over to the bucket of water. I notice her hand twitch and I instantly know what she's trying to do. I quickly grab her hand and give her a serious look. "No, you need to rest. We have no idea where they are and I don't want to risk anything." I tell her, but her frown only grows deeper.
