Gayoung walked into her class, Subin by her side. She was so much happier at college now that she had a friend. Or rather, friends. Because somehow all of Subin's friends had become hers as well, at least she liked to think that they were all friends.

They sat down in their seats and she heard Subin bang his head on the desk beside her.

"Hey don't do that!" she exclaimed, placing her fingers on the desk so that he'd stop hurting himself. "What happened?"

"I forgot all of my pens," he sighed, looking into his bookbag again. "How is that even possible?" he mumbled, half talking to himself.

"You have pencils," she pointed out.

Subin glared at her. "Pencils are for math, and math only," he told her. "I have to use a pen for this class."

"Well then use one of these," she told him, taking a pen out of her pencil case before passing the case over to him. "Choose whichever ones you like, just make sure you give it back to me before the end of class."

She stopped talking as the teacher walked in and then she pulled out her notebook, ready to start the day.

Gayoung should have known better than to give her whole pencil case to Subin.

Because now she was in math, and she realized that he still had it. She'd forgotten to ask for it back after their class together, and he'd forgotten to give it back to her.

And now she was in math class, stuck only with a pen.

She absolutely hated doing math with pen. She simply was not smart enough for that, at least not smart enough in math. She made too many mistakes. A while ago she'd tried doing math in pen, thinking that it would look pretty, but that had been a bad idea. She'd made so many mistakes and had to use so much white out that her notes for that day looked ugly.

Long story short, she needed a pencil. But she did not have one.

Gayoung hesitantly turned to the girl next to her, and tapped her on the shoulder.

The girl turned around, a look of surprise on her pretty face.

"Do you have a pencil I could borrow?" Gayoung whispered.

The girl's look of surprise melted into a smile, and she nodded, fishing one out of her bag and handing it to Gayoung.

"This unit is really hard, isn't it?" Gayoung said lightly, trying to strike up a conversation as she racked her brain, trying to remember this girl's name.

"It is," the girl agreed, taking out her notebook. "What's your name again? Sorry, I'm terrible with names," she said apologetically.

Gayoung laughed in relief. "Don't be sorry!" she exclaimed. "I was just about to ask the same thing. I'm Gayoung."

"I'm Yejin," the girl said, flipping open her notebook.

Gayoung gasped when she saw Yejin's notes. "Wow! Your notes are so pretty... how?" she said, pouting as she took out her notebook and showed Yejin her notes, which were a beautiful disaster.

Yejin just laughed.

"Would you like to study together sometime?" Gayoung asked her.

"I would love too," Yejin said, her eyes turning sad. "But I'm afraid I probably won't be able to. I don't have a lot of time, you see. I'm sorry."

Gayoung waved away the apology. "Don't be. I also am pretty busy after school. Well... let's be friends? Do you want to be friends?"

Yejin laughed again, nodding. "Yes, let's be friends," she agreed.
