"What movie do you want to see?" Hanse asked as they stood on line to buy the tickets.
"That one," she said, pointing to one of the posters. "It looks happy and romantic and fluffy."
"You don't want to watch a scary one?" Hanse teased. "That's even more romantic. Then I can protect you."
Gayoung made a face at him. "It won't be romantic. I'll cry and leave the theater and be mad at you for making me watch such a movie."
Hanse laughed, "okay, scary movies are definitely out of the question then," he agreed. They got to the register and he bought the tickets. "Do you want popcorn or something?" he asked her.
"Popcorn and soda is a must at the movie theater," she said firmly. "But I'm paying for that. I can't have you buying everything."
"But-"
"No buts."
"But didn't you just get a job so that you could earn money? Let me buy it, I..."
"You're rich?" she asked, turning around and raising an eyebrow at him. "I know. You're rich, and I'm not. But that's okay. That doesn't mean that I'm going to let you buy everything for me. Today you will let me treat you to popcorn and soda, understood?" she told him teasingly, linking her arm with his and dragging him over to the food stand. She let go of him to take out her wallet and pay for the food and drinks, and then they went to see their movie.
They entered the theater early, so early that they were the only ones there. Except for one boy, who was sitting and eating popcorn, staring at the black screen as though it were something captivating.
"Chan?" Hanse called out, his voice a mixture of amusement and surprise.
The other boy turned around, a wide smile coming to his face as he saw them.
He had two dimples, and it was the absolute cutest thing ever. Her heart flip-flopped when she saw him. How were all the boys she was meeting lately this cute?
She remembered that Seungsik had mentioned Chan as one of the other boys she'd yet to meet. Well, now she was going to meet him. Then there'd be two more to go and she'd have met all of Subin's friends.
Thinking of Subin, she wondered if something was going on. He seemed rather out of it today. Not quite as bubbly and happy as usual, and he'd had to leave class early without telling her why.
Hanse led them over to Chan, and they sat down next to him. Chan, Hanse, then her.
Chan leaned over Hanse and peered at her. "Who's this? Your girlfriend?"
"Didn't Subin tell you about her?" Hanse asked, laughing. "She's his new friend, and now... she's everyone's friend."
"He probably did text me," Chan sighed. "I just haven't been checking my phone lately."
"Are you okay?" Hanse asked, lowering his voice and sounding concerned.
Chan glanced over at her and nodded. "I'm fine," he said, not sounding fine at all. "I'm just always here," he said with a laugh, and Gayoung couldn't quite tell if he was joking or not. "And phones aren't allowed."
"I'm sure you could check your phone sometimes," Hanse said lightly.
Gayoung got the impression that they were trying to keep the conversation light and airy because she was there.
There was something about these boys that they weren't telling her. A part of her wanted to look them up, to see if she could find out who they really were... but she didn't. She couldn't. Despite having known them for less than a week, she felt like that would be breaking their trust. And she didn't want to do that.
"But the point of being in the theater is to escape from all that," Chan said, leaning back in his chair and closing his eyes. "I'm trying to escape," he said softly.
