It was the day of the party and sure it was sad, and it was now a party for an unexpected reason. All three boys were there in their superhero forms for one last time for the event. Everyone was engaging in small talk including the heroes, except for Hightide. He was on the balcony looking up at the stars. He rested his forearms on the railing while his head was hanging low. "Why did it have to be you that had to go?" He asked looking at the brightest star in the sky. "I can answer that kid," Hephaestus said. Hightide turned to see the god in all his godly glory. "Can I join you?" Hephaestus and Hightide only nodded. Hephaestus copied the position Hightide had and sighed. "I know you miss her kid. I do too. She was one of the best," He said sadly. Hightide stopped looking at the stars and looked to see the god beside him a little teary eyed. "The last hero to have my necklace was a boy named Edward around four hundred years ago. The power went to his head and he almost took over the world. He was transformed and he was close to taking thousands of lives. A girl named Martha was the one who had your ring. She used her trident to stab the boy she loved in the heart to save everyone. In the process, she stabbed the necklace," He said. He paused trying to gather all the facts from long ago. Hightide just sat there in awe. "That instantly killed him and dropped his transformation. When I was basically booted from the necklace I saw it was destroyed," he said holding up the necklace Sam wore. He popped it out and flipped it over and handed it to Hightide. He looked over it, traced his fingertips across all the cracks. "After a few decades, I got it back in one piece. Fast forward Sam got the honour of saving the world. The necklace has memory of its own and when that blast hit right on her heart it hit the necklace too. The necklace remembered what happened and it decided to let Sam have unlimited power to protect itself. It is a strange mechanism really," he went on looking at the necklace in Hightide's hand. Hightide handed it back and the god put it back where it belonged. "Sam's body didn't have the strength to have that much power in her bloodstream, only Gods have that kind of strength. I'm honestly surprised about how long she lasted. Anyway, once all the commotion was gone and the necklace deemed it safe it ripped away almost all that power. The little power it left in her body was what made that mark," Hephaestus said. Hightide hung his head low wanting her to come back. Hephaestus sighed and put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "She's watching you, you know?" He said and Hightide looked at the god looking depressed. "You're saying that to make me feel better," He said and the god simple shook his head. "She really is. She misses you, but you guys will be together one day," Hephaestus said. Hightide smiled. Everyone heard the clinging of a glass and turned to someone on the stage. Hephaestus looked at Hightide. "I'll join you guys in a minute," he said softly and the god nodded in understanding. Hightide looked back up to the stars and sighed. He heard what sounded like a toast back in the main room and everyone giggling in her memory. Hightide sighed. "One day," he repeated. One tear ran down his cheek, but it wasn't sadness that made it fall. It was happiness. Does he know why he is happy right now? Nope, but he had a small smile on his face. Maybe it was because he knew Sam was safe. Maybe it was because his emotions were out of wack and weren't working. Or maybe it was because he knew he would be with the love of his life again one day.
