Chapter 69

Alex...

"Your Highnesses, wake up. Please."

If it wasn't for the urgency in Will's voice, I would've told him to piss off. "What's going on?" I grumbled, sitting up tiredly.

Upon rubbing my eyes, I noticed it was still very dark in the room, meaning the sun still hasn't risen.

"Is it time to train already?" Aurelia sounded even more tired than me.

"It appears we have miscalculated. The Darkness is upon us." His voice was as grave as the frown on his face.

"What? Oh my gosh, what do we do?" Aurelia hopped out of bed, suddenly more alert. I shot up as well, feeling the danger welling in my gut.

"How long?" I asked.

"An hour. Maybe two if we should be so lucky."

I caught Aurelia's eyes and she looked horrified. The words of comfort got caught in my throat because I feel the same. Absolutely horrified.

"Come quickly once you are dressed. We will be eating breakfast as we formulate the last of our plans." The Captain informed us, leaving the room so we could change.

"Alex, we were supposed to have more time."

"I know, sweetheart, I know." That was about all I could get out as we quickly changed into our same outfits from yesterday.

Our brisk walk to the dining hall was quiet. We were both scared and didn't know what to say. The only comfort we could provide each other were subtle squeezes of our hands.

"Rel!" Nixie caught our attention, shortly followed by Phoenix, as we entered the room.

"Nix!" Aurelia threw herself into her friends arms.

"How did you sleep, mate?" I asked Phoenix, letting the girls linger in their embrace.

"Not great."

"Me either. I don't feel good about this."

"It's war. Of course we're not going to feel good about it." Nixie blubbered, letting her emotions show fully as she removed herself from the hug.

The next hour dragged by painfully slow. I had no appetite, but I forced myself to eat, knowing I would need the energy. Both the Captains went over escape routes, should things escalate too badly, and countless battle strategies. I zoned out, not hearing much of what was said.

Aurelia looked just as zoned out as she shuffled her eggs around her plate. The only time she tuned in was when she was informed her grandmother made it to the safe house alright. I could tell she was relieved at that, but still afraid for the rest of the events that would unfold today. It didn't help that no one has yet to hear from our mortal friends. Harry tried to calm her by saying a guard probably took it upon themselves to bring them home, but I could tell she wasn't going to feel better unless she knew for sure.

Just when I felt like I could burst from anxiety, a guard came running into the room. The frantic nature in which he burst through the door, told me what he was going to say before he said it.

"Your Highnesses, Captain. It is here!"

I gulped, stealing a glance at Harry who stood up frigidly and nodded. "It is time. Everyone, to the main courtyard. Be prepared for anything." He addressed the room before turning to Aurelia, Nixie, Phoenix and I. "Are you all ready?"
