Chapter 52

Alex...

"Aurelia!" I chased through the woods after my emotional girlfriend. "Rel, slow down! You're still recovering."

"They're dead, Alex!" She whipped around to face me. "They're dead."

The sound of her whimpering broke my heart. She started to crumble to the ground, but I was quick to catch her.

"I know, darlin', I know."

"It's so unfair."

We stood in the center of the trees. I could hear more guards arriving to the scene of the mutilated wolves, and the murmurs of our friends. Aurelia, having heard them, too, pulled her hands into the air, shrouding us in a cocoon of vines.

Satisfied with the privacy, she tucked herself back into me, crying out her sorrows. It was hard for me to hold back, too. Although I wouldn't admit it out loud, I've come to adore those kind creatures. They always treated me with equal respect, even though I didn't possess the same abilities as my girlfriend.

It also bothered me that they were mates who were mind controlled to kill each other. I couldn't help the awful slew of visions my brain had of that happening to Aurelia and I.

I was already possessed and hurt her once. What if I do it again?

I shuddered at the thought.

"Princess? Are you alright?" Harry's concerned voice was muffled through the wall of vines.

"Captain, can you give us a moment?" I asked, hiding the tears from my voice. I was just too overwhelmed from the past week.

"Of course, Your Highness. Although, I would recommend taking the Princess inside while the bodies are cleaned up." Aurelia sobbed at the word 'bodies'.

"Yes, of course. Thank you, Harry."

I heard his footsteps receding, and pulled away enough to look down at her sad face. "Come on, let's go inside."

She just gave a slow nod, and a broken ′okay′ in response.

She lowered the vines, putting us in view again. In the short distance, I could see one of the mangled limbs being lifted off the ground. I quickly turned us away, briskly walking in the direction of the castle.

A little ahead of us, I could see Evan, Lindsey, and Nixie making their way towards the garden. Turning back slightly, I could see Prince Phoenix staying behind to help.

"I hope their deaths were quick." I heard Aurelia sigh, sounding a little more calm as we stepped inside.

I hummed in agreement, leading her down the corridors until we reached her bedroom.

Once we stepped through the door, the overwhelming smell of roses hit me. The smell of her. It instantly calmed me down.

"Are you okay?" She asked, putting on a brave face.

I sat us both down on her bean bag from New York. Evan brought it for her last time he visited Earth. "I'm fine. I'm more worried about you. You've been through a lot this week."

"I'm tougher than I look. I'll be okay." Her voice gave out, cracking in a heart shattering way.

Pictures of bloody ice and water started painting in my mind. I didn't realize my face was twisted in pain until I felt her soft fingers brushing over my forehead.
