Chapter 53

Alex...

I was shocked.

I couldn't move. Couldn't breathe.

I was hunched over, grasping onto the rocks for dear life, as I stared at the water.

I was struggling to process what happened. She was here, and everything was fine, until it wasn't.

"Oh my God! What do we do?" I vaguely heard Evan yell beside me.

I could still see her falling in my mind. I could still picture her wide and terrified eyes as she reached out for me. I could hear her screaming my name, begging me to save her. I could still see the glittering water as the portal sucked her in.

"Aurelia!" I didn't realize I had screamed until I felt a hand on my shoulder.

I ripped my eyes away from the empty river, meeting the frantic eyes of Harry. "She's gone! Oh my God, she's gone!" I quickly scrambled up, feeling drunk and lethargic in my panicked daze. "What do we do?! She's GONE!"

"Alex, breathe." Will was beside me in a second, but I was too far in. My head was spinning a mile a minute, and I was seconds away from throwing up.

"I have to get her!" I turned, not thinking, and jumped off the small cliff before anyone could stop me.

As I was flying through the air, I could hear everyone screaming at me. I barely remembered my thoughts from earlier of this small cliff still being able to cause damage if you land the wrong way. Aurelia is hurt, and now I'm about to be.

Aurelia fell into the river. She's gone.

"Alex!" Will sounded horrified. "Princess Nixie, do something!"

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the impact, but just before I hit the water, I felt a force wrap around me. I felt myself land and then bounce back up. It was such a weird feeling.

Opening my eyes, I could see I was trapped inside a large bubble made of water, and floating on top of the river, heading down stream.

Before I could get far, the water started to reach upwards, back to the top of the cliff. Nixie released the mass of water as soon as I was above land, letting the water drop and soak me.

"Alexander, you idiot!" Will picked me up by the collar, shaking me in a rage. I could see the fear in his eyes. "The Princess is already missing, we do not need you dead, too! She is not down there! Did you not see the portal swallow her up?"

"Where did she go? Where is she?!" The terror filled my loud cries. Looking to the trees, I swore I could see her standing there, dress and hair flowing in the breeze. "Aurelia!"

"Snap out of it! Calm down!" Phoenix shouted at me, sounding frustrated himself. "You freaking out will get us nowhere!"

"Where did that witch go!" Harry angrily slammed his sword into the dirt, causing us to glance at the now empty place where the woman had once been. "DAMN IT! I lost her again!" He screamed his fury and pain into the air.

I sunk to the ground, feeling the tears well in my eyes.

I can't believe this. How could I be so stupid? I literally had a dream last night, warning me something would happen, and I blatantly ignored it. And now, she's God knows where in this giant, magical realm.
