I took the opportunity to catch my breath while watching the rest of the students re-enter the arena. I smiled when I caught sight of Midoryia trying to hold back his tears after coming in first place. Soon everyone was dismissed except for those who placed 42nd and higher.
We all gathered up and waited for Midnight to announce the next event. We impatiently watched the screen until our next event popped up. Confusion was evident on all our faces as we read the words, "Cavalry Battle."
A cavalry battle wasn't exactly an odd choice for a sports festival event, but this wasn't your typical sports festival. How was a cavalry battle even supposed to work?
Many voiced their questions and concerns out loud until Midnight snapped and began to explain how the event would work. We were each awarded points based on where we finished in the obstacle course. We would team up and each group would be worth a certain point total, displayed on our headbands...grab headbands to accumulate points...top four teams advance.
It didn't seem too complicated. There was only one problem...who would want to team up with me? I was worth 170 points, but I don't think any of the point totals really mattered since poor Midoriya was worth 10 million for coming in first. I looked around the arena and saw students flocking to Todoroki and Bakugo while avoiding Midoriya. Most seemed to be sticking with their friends and classmates. I could try to team up with Midoriya, he was obviously available, but I'd leave that option as a last resort.
Communication was going to be important as the team would have to move as a cohesive unit. I glanced around and spotted Koda talking with Toru.
"Are you two teaming up?"
Koda nodded.
"Can I join you? I think I've got a decent strategy if we were to team up."
"Sure!" Toru cheered. "You're really smart so what are you thinking, Kana?"
"Well, Toru, if you're comfortable with it, you could take your jacket off so no one could see your arms and be the rider. That might make it easier to steal other headbands. We would just need to focus on defending the ones we have. Koda and I are strong so we should be able to keep people away from close range. If we could just get another person to protect at mid-range I think we'd have a good chance."
I paused and looked around to see if anyone else hadn't found a team when Toru yelled out, "Kyoka!"
I turned around to see Kyoka quickly walking our direction. "Hey," she said a little shyly. "Can I be on your team?"
"Yes!" Toru cheered. "Kana just said we needed someone for mid-range defense and your earphone jacks will be perfect for that. You could help steal headbands, too"
"That's...actually perfect," I said. "Nice, Toru. Welcome to the team Kyoka."
"Thanks guys. I was gonna team up with Momo, but Todoroki grabbed her. They're going to be a tough team to beat."
"The way I see it we have two potential strategies. We can try to go for Midoriya's big points and then see if we can protect it or we can avoid the big point teams entirely and focus on collecting a bunch of smaller-point headbands."
"We could do both," Kyoka suggested. "Let's start the match aiming for Midoriya. If we're able to nab his points, we go on the defensive. If it looks impossible we switch gears and try for the others."
I nodded in agreement. "I like it, we need to be adaptable since we have no idea what the other teams are planning. Kyoka, we're about the same height so why don't we take the sides and Koda, you can be in the front so we'll be balanced."
Everyone nodded and Toru began stripping off her jacket, shirt and sports bra. I could tell she'd done this before as she expertly rolled her shirt and bra into her sleeves and tied the jacket around her waist.
