The next morning I was back in gym gamma, but today I needed to practice on my own. "Ectoplasm, sir? Do you mind if I don't spar with you today? I want to work on a new aspect of controlling my quirk."
"I thought we were perfecting your ability to grow trees. Now isn't the time to be working on something new."
"Not new exactly, but, why don't I show you what I mean," I said, pulling out a seed. "You know how All Might suggested not to hold the seed in my hand? I decided to take that advice to the next logical step."
I whipped the seed, sending it flying through the air. I concentrated on it and formed a tree that went flying into the wall of cement in front of me, creating a large crater.
"I was worried about the accuracy of throwing a seed on the ground where I wanted it. While I was thinking about that, I realized if I didn't have to hold the seed in my hand while growing it, was there any reason the seed had to be on the ground? If I could form the tree in midair I could use it for long range attacks and also be faster since I wouldn't have to wait for the seed to land somewhere."
"Smart. So what you'll really want to practice is both your throwing accuracy and your ability to time the growth of your tree."
"Honestly, now is just about the timing. I'm planning to visit the design studio later. I came up with a gauntlet design that would allow me to shoot seeds instead of throwing them. If it works, then practicing throwing won't matter, I can wait to practice once I have the gauntlets."
"Excellent ideas, Satori. Keep working at it, then."
The next few hours were spent tossing seeds. I experimented with distance and height but my main goal was growing them quickly and without having to focus on them so intently. I wanted this to become something I could do without thinking, something that was second nature. As our time in gym gamma came to a close, I decided to make my way to the support course design studios.
I had never been in a design studio before or anywhere near the support course section of the school. When I walked in, Power Loader was sitting at a work bench fiddling with some electric wires. He looked up as I approached.
"You one of Eraser Head's? How can I help you?"
"I was wondering if you'd be able to develop a support item for me. I pulled a piece of paper out of my pocket and handed it to him. "I'm not an expert in tech design by any means but I did a rough sketch and detailed what I'd, ideally, want it to do."
"This is some good work. It'll take me a couple of weeks before I have a finished product but we developed something similar for a student in class B. We'd just have to modify it slightly for your use."
"So it's doable?"
"Absolutely!" he said with a smile. He took down my information and also measured my forearms. "Like I said, give me a couple of weeks at most. I've got a student who's been hammering out support items like crazy, so you may get them sooner than that. You'll have plenty of time to practice and get acclimated to using them before your licensing exam, so no worries there."
"Thank you so much." I gave a friendly wave as I made my way out. I was super excited that my idea would work. It would be a complete game changer for me and now I just had to wait a few weeks to start training with my new gauntlets.
Moving into the dorms turned out to be a fairly smooth transition. But the one new-to-me aspect was chores. Iida and Momo had come up with a chore schedule for all of us. We rotated cleaning the common area, the bathrooms, and making dinner. Laundry, as well as making breakfast and lunch were up to each individual. I was paired with Koda but with ten pairs of students there were only a few days of chores every other week. Koda turned out to be a good partner for me. As someone who'd never had to clean before, he was very patient in showing me how to go about things.
