بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

One of the exciting things about a newborn child is finding an appropriate name. The child’s name shows our aspiration for the child, or circumstances in which the child was born.

The names of the different Prophets Alayhimus Salaam have also been selected very carefully. Here are the names of 5 Prophets Alayhimus Salaam with their meanings:

1- Prophet Aadam Alayhis Salaam

Allah ﷻ created him from different types of clay. This is known as Adeem and so he was named Aadam.

2- Prophet Ibraheem Alayhis Salaam

There’s two parts to his name. The first is (اب) and the second is (رَحِيْم). Which would translate into English as Father of Raheem/Compassion. (Tafseer Imam Qurtubi)
Father of Raheem allows us to understand that Nabi Ibraheem Alayhis Salaam is a very compassionate person.

At the same time, we remember that in Surah Taubah, Allah ﷻ refers to RasoolAllah ﷺ by the name of Raheem. Allah ﷻ says, Certainly such a Messenger had come to you (who) is from amongst you; heavy upon him is your suffering; (he) is empathetically supportive of you; regarding the Muslims he is Raoof Raheem. (Surah Taubah v 128)

In this respects, Ibraheem would also mean Father of Raheem / Father of RasoolAllah ﷺ. This also holds true, for RasoolAllah ﷺ is a descendant of Nabi Ibraheem Alayhis Salaam.

3- Prophet Isra-eel Alayhis Salaam

This was the second name of Nabi Yaqoob Alayhis Salaam. Sahabi ibn Abbaas Radi Allahu Anhuma says that there’s two parts to his name: Isra+Eel.  Isra means servant and Eel refers to Allah ﷻ. So Isra-eel has the meaning of Abdullah / Servant of Allah. (Tafseer Imam Qurtubi)

4- Prophet Yusuf Alayhis Salaam

This name has two meanings. One being slave and the other being prison. (Tafseer Imam Qurtubi). We find that Nabi Yusuf Alayhis Salaam did experience being a slave and was later improsoned.

5- Prophet Yahh-Yaa Alayhis Salaam

This name means alive or invigorating. He was named Yahh-Yaa because he was given life with Nabuwwa and Imaan and through him Allah ﷻ invigorated the people with guidance.
