Laurent was on his way to pick Larry up from work.
Or at least that was the plan.
He did it all the time, usually after a whole day of trying to earn whatever little money he could make with his street performances. They didn't even need to text each other. Most of the time, Laurent ended his last performance around at a time that just so happened to coincide well with Larry's shifts at the restaurant. On rare occasions Larry would get off a bit early and join Laurent for his last dance before helping him pack his stuff. Tonight however, Laurent was on time and it surprised him a little not to find Larry waiting outside the front doors like he usually did.
Shrugging it off, Laurent headed inside the restaurant. He didn't like the place, to be honest. It was dark and stuffy and the food was not up to par with other places in the neighborhood but for some reason Larry had really taken a liking to his job as a kitchen clerk there and if Larry was happy, Laurent was happy, too.
The staff barely even looked up when he entered the place and only one of them did a double-take at seeing him. "Larry?" she asked, looking a bit startled.
"Try again," Laurent smiled at her, not in the mood to explain. He made a bee-line for the kitchen, frowning a bit when he heard the jumble of voices coming from in there.
"You can't go in there wearing street clothes, Larry. He's already pissed at you enough as it is."
That girl again.
Laurent paid her no attention.
The yelling inside the kitchen seemed to get louder with every passing second. Ignoring the waitresses warnings, Laurent dropped the bag with his stuff behind the bar and pushed through the swing door that led to a smaller and dimly lit hallway in the back office. It was a storage hallway containing racks filled with spices and canned food.
Laurent snuck up to the big iron swing doors that led to the kitchen area, sneaking a look through the windows to see who was causing all this ruckus.
Sure enough, Larry's boss stood in the center of the crammed little kitchen with his bulky arms stemmed into his waist. His face was red with how hard he was yelling, forehead sweaty as he gestured around and worked himself up into a frenzy.
And there was Larry.
Laurent felt his heart miss a beat at the sight of his brother, standing there with his shoulders slumped and his eyes trained on the ground. He had one of his arms dangling down and the other wrapped around it, guarding his chest like he tried to hide away from his boss.
"—so stupid you can't even get the simplest thing right. How many times do I have to explain something to you until you get it right! I should have known not to allow someone like you into my kitchen. All you ever do is fuck up. Letting things burn, breaking glasses and plates. I should have never—"
Laurent didn't know what happened next. He only knew that his brain made the snap decision to move. It was like one second he was standing there, listening and the next he was right up in the guy's face, shoving him away from his startled looking brother. "Who do you think you are yelling at him like that!"
Laurent had never been so furious in his life. The walls of the place shook with how loud his voice was. His heart was beating so fast, it felt like it was about ready to jump out of his throat and he wasn't even seeing right, his vision had changed, absolutely narrowed down to that guy's sweaty cheeks and shiny nose.
"So you can't even fight your own battles, huh, Bourgeois? You need your twin brother to come and speak up for you?"
Larry's hand found Laurent's shoulder, twisting in his flannel, trying to pull him back, but Laurent wasn't having it. He yanked his shoulder free, taking a step forward and jutting out his chin in defiance. "You say another word about him," Laurent growled. "Say one more thing about him and see what happens."
