Grayson's P.O.V.

I found Starr in her room Thanksgiving day, hiding from the many people in  our house.

"Starr? You alright?" She nodded a little,

"Yeah. Just overwhelmed." I nodded,

"Okay babe."

"Will you sit with me?" I nodded, doing so,

"Of course." She laid her head on my shoulder, sighing,

"Before I got to the orphanage, he'd only let me out for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We'd sit around and celebrate like a family."

"I'm so sorry Starr." She shook her head a little,

"We were never a family. I never had anything to be grateful for before. But this year I do. I'm really grateful for you. I-I'm not the best kid and I screw up a lot but you never give up on me, you just try harder. You're the reason we all have a family and we're happy and alive."

"I'm really grateful for you too love. You keep me on my toes." She smiled a little, hugging me,

"I love you dad."

"I love you too baby."

"I'm sorry I'm hiding in here. I-I know it's rude I just- There's a lot of people."

"It's alright. I'd rather you take a break in here than snap out there. I'm glad you know your limits."

"Me too."

"Wanna go back out together?"

"Yeah."

I looked over the clearly fake resume, then to the girl who couldn't have been more than sixteen,

"Well, I'm very impressed Makayla. This is... probably one of the best fake resumes I've ever seen." She froze,

"It-It's not fake."

"Don't feed me that bullshit. How old are you?"

"Sixteen. Barely."

"Why lie?"

"If you knew I was sixteen, you wouldn't have even glanced at my application. I-I'm a really hard worker and a quick learner. I just- I really, really need the money and I-I heard that you're a really good boss. I can do anything." She swallowed hard, her tired, dull green eyes slowly meeting mine, "A-Anything you want."

"My assistant has a daughter and can't make it on my weekend business trips I have twice a month. Could you? The company pays for a hotel and meals for the weekend."

"Yes. Absolutely."

"Past that you can work around the office and be like a second assistant Monday through Friday."

"Yes. I'll be here. I won't let you down."

"I hope not. Work starts at eight o'clock, sharp."

"Got it."

"And I'm gonna pretend you weren't offering sex for more money because that isn't how it works here. Not to mention I don't put up with people lowering their standards or worth around here."

"Yes sir. I-I'm very sorry."

"It's alright." She paused,

"There-There's one more thing. And it-it won't effect my working ethic at all and I'll never bring it up again, you-you just need to know."

"What is it?"

"I-I'm two months pregnant."

Makayla rushed into the lobby seven minutes late,

"I'm-"

"Late.", I cut her off, going to the elevator as she followed, "My important employees get a choice when they're late. A dollar off their paycheck for every minute they're late, or an alternative."

"W-What alternative?"

"In your case, seven dollars off your paycheck or my belt across your ass seven times.", I said calmly as I fixed my sleeve.

"W-What?", she laughed.

"I run a tight ship here Makayla. One person being late throws off my whole day."

"I-I'm sorry sir. I...I can't lose a cent of my paycheck-"

"I'm letting it slide today because you didn't know. But this is your only free pass."

"Yes sir. Thank you. And-And call me Kayla, please."

"Okay. So why were you late?"

"It-It's dumb. And weird."

"I still feel entitled to knowing."

"I-I took a shower at the gas station and got ready in my car and my-my shirt got stuck."

"Is that why your tag is sticking out?" She glanced back and sighed,

"Yes."

"May I?"

"Please." I gently fixed it, noticing how tight her shirt fit over her small baby bump. "Thank you."

"No problem."

"Wait, I-I'm an important employee?"

"Very."

~~~~
Kayla brought me a cup of coffee, attempting to button her jacket over her stomach. The button popped off as she sighed,
"Son of a-"
"Don't cuss in my office Makayla."
"Yes sir. Sorry." She let out a breath, sitting across from me, "Dumb baby.", she muttered.
"The baby is not dumb. It's a part of life kid."
"Well it shouldn't be a part of my life."
"I'm not disagreeing. Personally I don't think kids should have kids. But I don't judge because I understand shit happens."
"I'm glad someone does." I sighed,
"I can't have my wonderful assistant walking around in clothes that don't fit. People will think I don't pay you. Let's go shopping."
"Grayson-"
"My treat. Please."
~~~~

Kayla stopped at a run down car in the parking lot, getting in and returning in a more casual outfit that fit her bump much better.

"You... keep extra clothes in your car?", I asked, opening my passenger door for her.

"No, I-I... live in my car Gray." I went around and got in next to her,

"You... live in your car?" She nodded a little,

"Y-Yeah."

"Elaborate please." She sighed,

"My dad is a very... old fashioned man... my mom left when I was little and he kinda pushed me into her spot. A few months ago, I went to the grocery store so I could cook him and my younger brother dinner. We lived in a scary part of town but by that point in my life I didn't think much about it. I was walking home close to dark and an old lady who lived a few houses down couldn't get her walker out of her car. I stopped to help and helped her inside and when I left, her neighbor dragged me into his house. An hour later, I walked out, picked up my groceries, and went home to make dinner. My dad was pissed I was late. A few weeks later I packed my bags, told him I was pregnant and he kicked me out. He didn't wanna hear anything else, all he caught was his daughter was a whore."

"You are not a whore Kayla. Don't ever say that again." I paused, "I'm really sorry that happened kid." She shrugged,

"At least I have a job."
