Cameron's P.O.V.

Later that day, Mason came up to me as I did the dishes from lunch,

"Can I help?"

"Of course.", I said handing him a towel to dry things. It wasn't long before he asked the inevitable,

"Why does Miles think he's thirteen?"

"It's... a long story..."

*One and a half years ago*

"I kinda like it when it's just Miles.", Alex said softly, "I'm getting used to the kid."

"I know. But they all have to leave eventually Al, it means we're doing our job."

"Well maybe we should stop for awhile." I rolled my eyes,

"He's doing really good."

"We're not ready to let go."

"But he's ready Al." Just then, something broke in the kitchen. Alex and I jumped up, rushing in to find Miles across from a broken window, holding a ball.

"Miles were you playing ball in the house again?", Alex asked.

"No!", he defended.

"Miles do not lie to me!"

"I'm not fucking lying!", he snapped before gasping.

"Room, now.", I demanded.

"B-But-"

"Go." He huffed but did so as I sighed, following him.

"I-I'm sorry Cam.", he whispered, sitting on my bed. I sighed, sitting next to him,

"I know buddy. You've been so good lately! We-We were talking about letting you go home." His eyes lined with tears at the word,

"I-I know."

"This is a set-back, but not a big one. You can still go home soon-" He burst into tears,

"I-I-I don't wanna go home Cam! She-She's gonna hurt me a-again!", he sobbed. Alex bolted in, surely hearing the commotion,

"What's going on?" He sat next to Miles, who turned around and latched onto him,

"Don't make me go home! Please! I-I'll be good I promise!"

"Miles, hey, calm down kiddo. You're gonna make yourself sick baby. Just breathe.'

"Sh-She'll hurt me.", he whispered, calming down, "Please, please don't make me."

"Shh, you're not going anywhere kid. You're safe."

"Alex-"

"He's staying Cameron.", he snapped, glaring at me, "He's safe here. He's staying here."

"I'm safe here.", Miles whispered.

*Present Day*

"We're pretty sure he has brain trauma because of his mom. Whether it's physical or mental, we don't know. He might stay a few years back or this age for his whole life or one day he might wake up and understand he's twenty three. We just don't know. But he's safe here and he'll stay here."

"At least he's happy."

"Yeah. He's basically our kid now." I paused, "It's a secret, but our birthday gift to him is adoption papers. If he signs them, he won't have to worry about ever leaving."

"That's awesome Cam."

"I know."

That night, our bedroom door opened and Miles came in. The clock read 11:58.
