Serene POV
When I got back to my room I took a quick shower then changed into some clean clothes. I laid on my bed looking up at the ceiling, trying to comprehend everything that had happened today. But most of all, what could happen next. If the voices didn't stop, then what would happen? Would they drive me to kill Jean? Could they? Then I found myself asking the same question I had asked myself my whole life.
Why me? Why? Why was I like this? I never asked for it, I never asked for anything. Yet I was still granted it. I would give anything to not be this way, to not be always scared of hurting someone I cared about. It wasn't right. None of it was. What would it take to not be like this? Suddenly, I heard a knock on my door. I instantly sat up and went over to the door.
"Yeah?" I asked, not bothering to open the door yet.
"Serene, it's me." Peter answered. "We need to talk." My heart started beating frantically in my chest. Had Charles told him even though I asked him not to? I took a shuddering breath and opened the door. Peter was standing there, looking somewhat worried.
"Is...everything okay?" I asked slowly. Peter stood there for a moment.
"Can I come in?" He asked. I nodded slowly and opened the door wider for him to come inside. He took a seat on one of the couches by the fireplace and after closing the door, I joined him.
"So what do you want to talk about?" I asked nervously.
"Serene," Peter sighed. "I just want you to promise me that you won't keep secrets from me. I know we've been through a lot, that you've been through a lot. More than anyone should in their whole life. I just want you to know that I'm here for you and you can tell me anything, and I won't judge. So, is there anything that I should...know about?" I just stared at him for a moment, trying to figure out if this was some sort of trick or not.
"Um, no." I said after a pause. "If there was, I would have told you by now, right?"
"Yeah, you would have." Peter said with a small smile. I gave him a small smile back. We sat there in silence for a few more seconds before Peter got up.
"I'll see you at the party later," He said right before walking out the door, leaving me alone again. As soon as he did, I felt my heart sink. I had just lied to him, right when he told me not too. That's when I heard the voice in my head again.
"Everything is about to change."
