Chapter 23

Peter POV

I paced back and forth nervously outside Serene's room. Hank was inside checking on her, waiting for her to wake up. According to him and Raven, she had collapsed. The same time Jean had an energy surge and collapsed as well. I had known something was wrong. I had felt it. But I didn't do anything about it.

Suddenly the door opened and Hank walked out.

"Is everything okay? Is she okay?" I asked quickly.

"Yeah," He answered after a moment. "She's awake, but she seems really stressed about something. She wouldn't tell me, but maybe she'll tell you. I've gotta check on Jean, but I'll be back to check on Serene in about an hour." I nodded as he walked down the hall towards Jean's room. I opened the door and slipped inside Serene's room. To my surprise, she wasn't in bed. She was sitting in her chair just staring blankly out the window. But something was off. Her hand was trembling and her lips were moving but no sound was coming out.

"Serene?" I asked slowly.

"What happens next?" Serene asked, continuing to face the window.

"What do you mean?" I asked, my heart started to beat a little bit faster.

"The voices," she said. "They're telling me to do something. And part of me, the ghost part of me, wants to do it. The ghost part of me knows it needs to be done. But the other part of me- just me, I guess- can't possibly do that. And I hate it." This time Serene turned to me and I could see tears streaked across her face. "I hate the voices. They never leave me alone." I walked over to her and slowly put my arm around her shoulder.

"It's okay," I whispered to her. "Whatever you decide to choose, I'll be with you every step of the way."

"No," Serene said, shaking her head. "Not this time. If I choose to do it I have to do it alone. And there's no coming back from it."

"What are you talking about? What do you have to do?" Serene continued to shake her head and I could almost feel the frustration rising in her.

"I can't." She muttered. "But I have to. And everyone will hate me for it but it's a chance I'm willing to-" Suddenly she stopped talking and stared straight ahead.

"Serene?"

"She's gone. Jean left."

This is the last short chapter. The next chapter is really sad, just to warn everyone. I have big plans for Serene's character development coming up that I'm super excited about but won't happen for another 2 chapters. Thank you so much for reading and I'll be updating every Saturday.
