"Mr Sloan," the doctors asks walking towards us.
"Yes," he replies, standing up, I mimick him.
"Your wife is out of surgery. She had a massive intracranial hematoma, which is basically a collection of blood within the skull. We managed to fix it, but she has swelling on the brain, so we have had to put her in an induced coma until the swelling has gone down. Her thigh bone is broken, so we had to put a metal rod and screws in. She has a few other minor injuries that will heal on their own"
"Is she going to be okay?" I but in. He looks at me.
"I can't give you an answer right now, but we've done all we can. In a few days, we are going to try and wake her up, but it's just a waiting game now. I'm sorry. "
"Can we see her?"
" Yeah, I'll send a nurse to come and get you soon,"
"Thank you," Mark says, shaking the doctors hands.
I just collapsed on the chair, tears streaming down my face. I instantly feel Lexi's arms around me. That's how we stayed for what seemed like ages but must have only been about 10 minutes when the nurse came and took us to her room.
"It's going to be okay. She's going to be okay," Lexi says. It was at this point that I realised I was shaking.
"Take a deep breath." I did as she said, and we walked in. My stomach dropped to the floor, more tears pouring from my eyes as they took it what was in front of me. She had a tube coming from her mouth that was connected to a ventilator who was breathing for her. Her normally pink lips were pale and lifeless, her beautiful dark brown hair was barely visible from under the bandages wrapped around her head, and she had cuts and bruises covering her face and arms. If it wasn't for Lexi holding me, I would have collapsed on the floor. I slowly made my way to the chair on the left side of her and took her hand in my, loving the way it felt in mine.
A week later.....
I haven't left the hospital all week, I just sit on the chair day and night. I only leave the room to use the toilet or get a quick shower in the adjoining bathroom. They tried to wake her up yesterday, but she still hasn't woken up yet. She is breathing on her own now, which I guess is something. Mark has been amazing. He brings me food and things to keep me occupied. He makes sure I'm okay, as he said, "Callie would kill me if I didn't." I can tell he's struggling, but him being a man pretends he's fine.
"Good morning, Arizona, morning Mark," the nurse smiled, walking into the room.
"Morning Demi," I reply, forcing a little smile. She has been here most of the week, always coming in and checking on Callie as well as me and Mark. She is such a lovely person. Demi did her observations and left, saying she would be back later.
"Just going to get a coffee, do you want one?" Mark asked
"Please," I say before taking Callie's hand in mine.
"I'll be back soon," he smiles before leaving .
I sit there, Callie's hand in mine as I watch the tele. A few minutes later, I feel something lightly squeeze my hand. I looked at Callie and saw her eyes fluttering, trying to open. I instantly press the buzzer for the nurses.
"Ari-z-ona," she says, barley audible.
"I'm here." I smile through tears, gently stroking her face. Just then, Demi comes running in.
Not long later, the doctor came in to check on Callie. He was happy with how she was doing, and he allowed me to give her some water through straw, which she seemed really happy with.
"OMG Callie," Mark yells, walking through the door.
"shit I'm so sorry I should have rang you. It all happened so fast." I apologise to Mark
"Hey dont be sorry, I would have been back sooner, but I got us some food from the café down the street."
"How are you feeling?" he asks Callie
"Great," she croaks. A faint smile appeared on her face. He just laughed
" I should go get Sofia. She's missing her mummy." he smiled before leaving.
"Arizona"
"Yeah,"
"I'm sorry," she whispers
"Let's not take about it right now," I smile, making her smile a little bit.
I am so happy right now, knowing she's awake and doing okay. When something like this happens, it really puts things into perspective. I never want to be without her, never again. A while later, Mark returned with a little girl who was the spitting image of Callie. She must be Sofia. It's the first time I've ever seen her, but there is no mistaking she is Callie's.
"Now Sofia, remember what I said? Mummy is really poorly, so you have to be careful," Mark says before letting her walk to Callie.
"hey babygirl" Callie whispered with a little smile on her face.
"Hey mummy," she grins back. Gently placing a kiss on Callie's hand, making my heart melt. Sofia then looks up at me and smiles.
"Hi," she grins
"Hi, I'm Arizona."
"Arizona is a very special friend of mummies." Mark butts in before anyone could say anything else.I looked at Callie, and a little smile was plastered on her face, which caused me to smile. I gently squeezed her hand.
The next half an hour consisted of Sofia telling Callie all about school and what she's been doing all week. She is so cute and adorable, but soon Callie was getting really tired, and Mark took Sofia home so Callie could rest. Not long after they left, she fell asleep. I sat in the chair, still holding her hand, and let my eyes close.
