'The best gift you can give him right now is to let him go.'
I sniffled as Sunghoon's words from the previous night rang in my ears for the billionth time since the very morning. It wasn't easy for me. Not at all.
You couldn't just unlove someone like that knowing they are going to die soon, knowing that at some point of your life they meant everything to you.
"Jaehyun will get discharged tomorrow morning," Sunghoon disclosed, walking inside the bedroom with a tray. His black hair were a disheveled morning mess, his face having a natural glow despite waking up moments ago, "I think you should get everything sorted out soon, Areum. It's best not to delay—"
"But I need time to digest the facts!" I cried in protest.
"I know you do," He placed the mug on the side table, a delicious aroma of caffeine valorising my sorrowful senses, "But darling, he doesn't have that much time. It's better to let him free before anything. He's struggling in ways we both cannot understand, it's best we free him of some burden, isn't it?" He said in a soft, tender voice.
It was true. Jaehyun was hurting a lot. And if it was his wish for me to breakup with him, then I was no one to keep him tied up in something he didn't want to be a part of any longer. Sigh. At this point, I didn't even know if Jaehyun loved me or not.
I was still too shocked knowing I was Sunghoon's first and only love. Wasn't it too much for me to process? Last night, Sunghoon narrated everything to me, each and every detail to this situation. Oh, it sure was one emotional night. I was no more hateful of Taehee or Jaehyun, but everything still hurt. It still felt foreign.
Jaehyun's parents had taken a flight overnight to Seoul as soon as they got to know about their son's condition. The family was utterly broken, and to give them some time and space, I had made myself home at Sunghoon's as he had graciously offered.
I was told that Jaehyun couldn't bear the fact he had taken someone who meant so much to Sunghoon. Me. The day Jaehyun had found out about this was the same day he had found about his condition.
Of course, he wasn't in his right mind when he made up this plan, portraying himself as the new superhero of the generation. What was the need? Everything could've been sought out verbally.
I felt the bed dip behind me, "Areum," Sunghoon called out in his rich velvety baritone, giving my shoulder a gentle squeeze noticing how I had spaced out, "I'm not asking this for you and me. It's for Jaehyun."
I nodded reluctantly, understanding his situation, as I wiped my tears. I needed to be strong because none of this was for me. It was all for Jaehyun.
Sunghoon smiled at the progress before bringing the piping hot coffee mug to his mouth, gently blowing on the beverage before dipping in.
"What is this? Breakfast in bed?" I cracked a smile, propelling myself on my elbows as I reached forward to grab my coffee mug, a small plate adorned with a variety of biscuits sitting beside it.
"Ah, you just gave it a wrong meaning, but oh well, you could say so," Sunghoon laughed, shrugging, "I just thought you'd like it here more." He smiled.
My heart melted at his caring nature and consideration, pumping loudly inside my chest craving some need of attention as I paid no heed to it. Was I being too cruel to myself by neglecting my own feelings? Maybe, but I just needed some time to figure out what was right and what wasn't.
There we sat, on Sunghoon's bed, both immersed in thoughts of our own. The space were silent, but our thoughts were fucking yelling at us. I just couldn't get Jaehyun out of my head, it wasn't a given, and I knew things will take time to settle.
"So," I cleared my throat, looking sideways at the gorgeous man beside sitting calmly beside me, "We're leaving for the hospital when..?"
"Whenever you say." He placed his hand above mine, tightening his lips as his mocha irises glistened. It wasn't easy for him either. Yet he was so calm, as if there wasn't a whole tsunami out there destroying his relationships and strengths.
I looked down at our hands, feeling his warmth I had grown to cherish from my whole heart.
"Tonight?" I asked, "I reckon we leave the family alone for a bit." My voice cracked, my inner self craving for more. And so, I properly intertwined our hands, looking at Sunghoon for a reply.
A very small hint of happiness could be seen on his face, knowing how I had initiated something, "As you wish," He brought our hands to his lips, placing a chaste kiss on mine.

"It's a bit slippery here, be careful." Sunghoon warned after he opened the door to my side, lending forward his hand as his other one tightly grasped an umbrella over his head against the harsh reality of the pouring rain. I grasped onto his palm, propelling myself out and standing close to him under the black umbrella.
His fingers reached for the car keys inside his denim jeans, after which he locked the car.
One hand in Sunghoon's grip and the other outstretched to feel the the pit-pat of rain, I felt Sunghoon fasten his steps to the hospital before the rain could get any more merciless.
"I was expecting you two," Taehee greeted us, waving off the fellow staff she was conversing with, her eyes trained upon Sunghoon who ran his hand through his semi-wet locks of jet black hair. I jerked the black umbrella before folding it neatly and tossing it inside the stand by the sitting area, "I couldn't bring myself upon to give this to his visitors, here's a receipt of Jaehyun's medicines. The shop is on the second floor."
"Jaehyun has visitors?" I asked, peeping onto the list in Sunghoon's hand.
"He sure does." Taehee shrugged, "I should take my leave now." She bowed before tightening her grip around the stethoscope slung around her neck as she turned on her heels, leaving us alone.
"How about you go to Jaehyun's room till I get the medicines?" Sunghoon asked, looking at me with some uncertainty. He tapped his leg against the tiled floor, watching me ponder upon the suggestion.
"Alright, I guess." I nodded, parting ways with him as I directed my steps to the wards.
"104," I read aloud before pushing open the door to Jaehyun's ward, my mind wondering who the visitor could possibly be.
I halted as soon as the people inside the room turned around to face me, the atmosphere inside so tense and gloomy, almost impenetrable for a ray of light to pass through.
