"I fell in love with your words. Unfortunately, you were a good liar."

"Take him to the operation theatre 046 right now!"

"This patient passed out due to internal bleeding, I think we'll need to start his surgery at the earliest.."

"Make way, make way! Call his doctor right now, call Dr. Byun and Surgeon Sim!"

And amongst all the voices ringing around me, I heard this one the clearest, "Areum, let go of his hand!" Sunghoon pleaded, trying to pry away Jaehyun's hand from my grip.

No. I don't want to lose him.

"Ma'am, it's urgent," The nurse gazed at me with the most pitiful eyes she could muster up on her face before springing me away from Jaehyun as he was being carried further away from me on the stretcher.

"No, no no no," I cried out, trying to follow him inside the operation theatre but Sunghoon's strong grip around my waist stopped me from doing so, "Let go! He needs me!" I yelled, thrashing around as much as I could within the restrains provided.

"Please stop it," Sunghoon sniffled, biting his lower lip as his cheeks too were stained with worry and anxiety, "Please calm down. It'll be okay.. he will be okay.." He shushed me down.

And I stopped struggling, relaxing myself against him. He will be okay. I needed to think positive, then it'll all be okay, right? Jaehyun will be very much present with us after his surgery, and he will be healthy and back to normal... right?

Turning around in his arms, I let myself fall into his embrace, our bodies shaking up with grief for someone who was on the verge of dying. He didn't even deserve to be in that operation theatre right now, battling for his life. Which sins was he paying for?

I remember thinking that night, just how unpredictable life could be. How your whole life can flip a complete 360 overnight. There's also no rule such as, if you do good for everyone, only good things will happen to you.
There's nothing that's always good that stays.

There's nothing good that stays forever.

There's no forever.

Oh how the night went in a blur, my only vision being weeping figures of Mr. and Mrs. Wu, my mother, our friends, all of them. No one had it in them to console the other.

It was almost as if they all had lost hope. That they knew the boy had struggled for his life for too long, but maybe it was his time.

Sunghoon's head had lolled sideways, his arms folded as he rested beside me. The man had fought sleep for four hours, shaking his head every now and then to snap himself out of the daze before it eventually took toll over him. He was exhausted, it was only reasonable for him to take a small nap. But on the other hand, it was as if sleep had completely left my system, just sorrow and fatigue taking over my body.
