Dawsey: Starting a Family Part 2

Chapter 146

Matt's POV: As me and Gabby arrived at the firehouse, I smiled when I went to grab my bag as well as my laptop. "I didn't even see you grab your laptop." I smiled when Gabby said that. "Reports are going digital remember?" Gabby nodded and agreed with me when I said that. She then went to open the door on her side and went to grab her pillow, blanket and bag. "You sure you don't want me to..." Gabby then gave me her signature glare and I just shut up. "Okay." Gabby just smiled because she loved the fact that she could just shut me up very easily.

Walking around the car, I went to rub her back and smiled at her. "I swear, I am going to be in so much trouble when our daughter is born. If you can control me like that, what is our daughter going to be like?" Gabby nodded and smiled when I said that. Going to close the door, Gabby then went to grab my hand and intertwined our fingers. "Remember that you don't have to grab your mask today. You can just wear your radio and jacket." I nodded and remembered that. "If there's someone stuck at the front door though...I am going to help out. Just saying."

Gabby nodded and agreed with me as we walked into the firehouse together. Grabbing a radio as I came in, I went to stop and smiled at Gabby. "Go get set up in my office okay?" Gabby nodded and agreed with me as I went to put my radio around me. I've started to carry it around all the time not since it was a pain to forget it. Sometimes I did and just wanted to keep it on me. Anyways, not like I was going in the big truck...I was riding with chief. Once it was on, I went to grab my bags again and walked in to see Chief. "You want me to drive the Jeep today?"

Boden then looked at me and smiled. "Maybe. We'll see okay? Maybe you can practice for when you take over someday." I then looked at him. "You are going to name me your successor?" Boden nodded and smiled at me. "Matt, you are captain...it's just the next step. Believe me, I am going to train you. I want to start now though so that we don't have to do it when you are busy with your triplets." I smiled when he aid that. "Let me talk to Gabby about it first okay?" He nodded and understood. "But sure, the keys are in there. It'll be nice to have you outside."

I smiled when he said that. "We still doing a staff meeting about it?" Boden then shook his head. "I already did. You guys are 30 minutes late." I then got worried. "Chief, I am so sorry." He nodded and went to rub my back. "It's okay. We didn't get a call. I know you are going to be bringing a lot more to work than normal." I nodded and agreed with him. "Just wait until the triplets are born...I might need to bring cribs." He laughed when I said that and nodded. That's when I felt Severide behind me. "Hey man, you forgot these in the car." I then turned to look at him and saw our water bottles. "Thanks man." I then looked at Chief. "Gabby has to drink a couple of these daily. If I'm busy...." Chief nodded and agreed. "Of course."

That's when I decided to make my way to my office. Seeing Gabby in there changing into some comfortable shoes, I smiled at her and then went to give her water bottle to her. "You like the pictures?" Gabby then saw the sonogram picture and smiled. "Yeah, I like that one." That's when I went to set my laptop down on my desk and then took it out to get it set up. "By the way, people are going to want to socialize with you." Gabby nodded and understood. "Not yet though. I agreed to come in but...I never said I was waking up yet. I am going to wake up at normal time." I nodded and understood as I watched her climb into my bunk.

Turning around in my chair, I smiled at her. "Chief said he wants to train me to be his successor. He wants to start now instead of when the triplets are born. Would you be okay with that?" Gabby then looked at me when I saw her grab the duffle bag she brought. Grabbing her iPad while laying down, she nodded. "Yeah, of course...that sounds great. That way you are getting trained and groomed to take over." Gabby smiled when I said that. "Honestly, I think that's a great idea." That's when I heard Mackey walk up to my office. "Sorry Captain. Just wanted to say hi to Gabby. I know we don't know each other much but...I wanted to talk about your baby shower."

Gabby then turned to look at her. "What's up Mackey?" Mackey then sighed. "I hope you didn't mind that I came. I know Matt more than I know you. I just didn't want you to..." Gabby then shook her head. "Mackey...you are family and you are my sister. Us paramedics have to stick together. Also, come to me if you ever have problems with the captain...I can talk to him." I then looked at her when she said that. "Who's team are you on?" 

Gabby then smiled. "I have been a paramedic longer than your wife. So, my loyalty has to start with other paramedics. Sorry." I then sighed when she said that before getting up and going to lean over her, kissing her softly. "You are overruled because you are carrying our triplets. They are going to be loyal to their father before your fellow paramedics. So sorry babe, but you are loyal to me first instead of other paramedics." Gabby then sighed and agreed. "He has a point Mackey....I am outnumbered right now."

Mackey laughed when I said that. "By the way, I ran into some paramedics the other day. They said they knew you from Puerto Rico. Davidson and Valdez from Ambo 85?" I smiled when Mackey said that. "Your roommates from Puerto Rico. I remember them, really nice couple. You remember that double date we went on my July 4th furlough? We were at the beach." Gabby then thought about it and smiled as she remembered our time there.

NOTE: I am going to do a few chapters that are flashbacks from their time there.
