Dawsey: Starting a Family Part 2

Chapter 199

Matt's POV: With Gabby resting on the couch and Louie still sleeping upstairs, I decided to start making us supper since it was already 4 o'clock. Plus, not like we can go anywhere or do anything. Just by looking outside, I could tell that a winter storm was rolling through. Heck, it looks so bad that I am scared that I am going to be called in to work because of the bad weather. I mean, would Gabby even let me do that? I mean, it would just be overnight. That's when I got a call from Chief. Looking at the phone, I sighed and went to answer. "Hey Chief, what's up?"

Chief sighed when he spoke to me. "Listen Matt, I know we agreed that you would stay out but...I am calling in the other shift ahead of time to help us out and we are looking for all hands on deck. With the storm, I would really like to have my captain back in action today. I mean, you still have a place here whenever you want to come back." I sighed when he said that and then agreed. "Listen, let me just wake up Gabby and see if she'd be okay with it." That's when I heard Gabby walk over to me. "Be okay with what?" Seeing her stretch, I smiled at her.

"Good nap?" Gabby nodded when I said that. "Now, answer the question." I sighed and looked at her. "You see the bad storm outside?" Gabby then looked at me when I said that. Wrapping my arm around her, I went to step close to her. "Chief's on the phone and is asking for all hands on deck. Heck, that's why I was starting supper early. I just had this feeling I would need to go in and help. I still have my spot there. Would you be okay with that or is it too risky for you?" Gabby then bit her lip. "Here, put me on the phone with Chief." I nodded and agreed with her.

Putting it on speaker, Gabby went to talk to Chief. "Chief?" Chief then spoke to her. "Gabby, how are you feeling?" Gabby sighed and then spoke to him. "Listen, I know how hectic things can get at the house on nights like tonight. But you know me being pregnant, I want Matt to be safe. So, same deal as before." Chief agreed with me. "How about you guys come here too? Firehouses have backup generators in case the power goes out. I promise that we are all tested before each shift. We are all negative. And you can stay in Matt's office or with us. You trust us right?"

I turned to look at Gabby when he said that. "Honestly babe, I think that's the best bet. If the power does go out here...I would rather you already be at the firehouse with me instead of you having to call me and tell me that you are driving here in bad weather. And I don't want you to get sick if it happens in the middle of the night. Gabby, I want to help but...I want you to be safe. Can you just come with me and be with me at the firehouse?" Gabby then looked at me and nodded. "I would love to. Chief, get someone to go out and buy a lot of soup okay? We are going to work as a soup kitchen too. I will call Antonio and get him to send his kids."

Chief agreed with me. "That is a great idea Gabby. Didn't even think about a soup kitchen." Gabby smiled when he said that. "Listen, I am going to get changed and take a shower...can you pack Louie up and then get changed? You can take a shower later after your first few runs. Oh and Chief, he gets his captain status back." Chief agreed with that as well. "Can you stay until it's calmed down even if that means part of the morning tomorrow? I want to keep the same shift here for morning rush. We are doing a switch tonight instead of in the morning." I turned to look at Gabby when he said that. "Can we just stay tomorrow's shift? We'll already be there."

Gabby nodded and smiled at me. "Yes, we can do that. Plus, I am positive that everybody wants to see Louie again. Now, get off the phone and let's get ready to go to the firehouse." I nodded and agreed with her, ready to get to work. "See you in a bit Chief." Hanging up, I walked up to our room with Gabby so that I could get changed and help pack up for the night.
