FLASHBACK - Miscarriage Night

Chicago Med Emergency Department
Gabby's POV: As I sat in the emergency room with my sister-in-law Christie Casey and my niece Violet, I was scared because of what I felt happen while we were still our with my brother. Matt was currently in jail with Antonio because of the fight they had outside Molly's. And honestly, I was not mad at him after just talking to him. Antonio had brought up Hallie and I knew that he was sensitive about it. And I completely understood, I just couldn't talk to him right now.

I had this bad feeling while me and Christie were on our way home from the police station but, I wasn't thinking that it was a big deal. But her being the caring older sister, she refused to let me go home without getting me checked out because she didn't want anything to happen to me or our triplets. Sitting there as I waited for a doctor to come see me in the room, I was glad when I saw it was Natalie. I knew her well and she knew my history when it came to pregnancies. 

Walking in, she looked at me and smiled. "Well, if it isn't the new Battalion Chief's wife." I laughed when she said that and nodded. "How do you know that?" She smiled when I said that. "The paramedics on Ambo 61 told me that they had a new chief and that it was Matt. He liking it so far?" I shrugged. "He hasn't had his first shift yet." Natalie nodded and looked at me when I said that. "Now, what seems to be the problem?" I then turned to look at Christie.

"Natalie, this is my sister-in-law Christie Casey. She was the one that recommended that I come here." Christie nodded. "She was really stressed tonight and I didn't want to learn something happened to the baby." Natalie nodded when she said that. "Honestly, I think you made the right move. Stress is never good on a pregnancy and if you can avoid it...do it at all costs. Heck, I would know considering my then-husband was in Afghanistan while I was pregnant with Owen."

I nodded when she said that before turning to look at the screen while she did an ultrasound. "Remind me how many babies you are having again?" I then turned to look at her. "We are having triplets." Natalie nodded when I said that before going to hover the wand over my pregnant stomach. She then started to move it a lot more when we started to hear heartbeats. However, I could already tell something was wrong because the heartbeats weren't as loud.

"Natalie, do you have the sound up at the normal volume?" Natalie when to check that for me and nodded. "Yeah?" I then started to get scared. Feeling Christie walk up to me and grab my hand, I had this bad feeling about what Natalie was going to tell me. That's when I saw Will come in. She must've paged him. (Doctor's have quiet pagers in case they need to call someone without scaring the patient). "Dr. Halstead, can you please come check something?"

Will nodded as he walked over to her and then went to look at the screen. I couldn't hear them whisper to each other but I had this feeling that this was bad. "She says it's triplets. But, I only see twins in here." Will nodded when she said that before going to check the screen. "I think that she is suffering another miscarriage honestly. I see a baby from the last ultrasound done but when you look at the same place where it was...it's not there anymore. Must've been recent."

Natalie nodded and sighed when he said that. "Thanks Dr. Halstead." Will then went to walk away and just nodded. I knew something was wrong right away. "Are the babies okay?" Natalie then sighed and turned to look at me. "Gabby, I want to first say this...you are still pregnant okay? That's not the problem." I then got scared when she said that. "Then what's the problem?" Natalie sighed and went to grab my hand. "One of the babies lost a heartbeat. We can't see it."

I then got really scared when she said that. "No, you have to check again...the baby has to be there!" She then went to grab my hand and sighed. "You want me to call Matt?" I shook my head and just started to tear up. "Can you tell me which triplet it was?" Natalie nodded. "It was one of your boys." I then started to cry even more. While I was glad that it wasn't one of the girls (that would've made me even sadder since it meant Matt didn't get his little girl), I was still really sad because I lost another baby. "Why, why did it happen?"

Natalie sighed when I asked her that. "I don't know Gabby, nobody can know why this happens. Now, do you need me to tell Matt?" I then shook my head. "No, I am going to tell him." Christie walked up to me and then went to rub my arm. "You want me to come with you and get him?" I then shook my head. "I'll tell him tomorrow. I need to grieve tonight." She nodded when I said that. "Want me to stay with you." I agreed and nodded. "Can you?" Christie smiled and then helped me up before hugging me. "It'll be okay."

I nodded while holding her close and just crying into her arms. God, Matt is going to hate this.
