The smoke in the air stung Aurelia’s eyes as she ran through the gates of Arkadia, her eyes wide as she witnessed the flames ravaging what was their only guaranteed hope for survival as a race. She could feel the heat on her skin as she came to a stop, her breath stuck in her throat as she stared up towards the plumes of billowing, black smoke.

“What the hell,” she murmured to herself, her head frantically turning as she tried to take in the chaotic scenes of people running around the base of the ark. She pressed the sleeve of her jacket to her nose as she moved closer to the group of huddled arkadians, her shoulders momentarily relaxing in relief as she finally spotted her best friend standing towards the edge of the group.

“Jas!” she attempted to call out as she ran to the boy, who looked just as alarmed at what was occurring in front of them. “Are you okay? What the hell happened here?”

“I have no idea,” he tried to say, but the sound of scared shouts drowned out his words.

“Is everyone safe,” Aura asked in a raised voice, her eyes quickly moving over the crowd of children who were crying as they held onto their families. “Fern- Where’s Fern!” the girl exclaimed as she rushed around the various huddled groups around the camp, her heart hammering against her chest ferociously as she tried to locate the young girl. 

“Lia!” Jasper called from behind her as she broke into a run for the building. “You can’t- it’s dangerous!”

Aurelia didn’t respond as she rushed through the main vault door, her eyes watering much more profusely now due to the stinging of the smoke filling the enclosed hallways of the ark. Despite covering her mouth and nose with the sleeve of her jacket, she could feel her lungs constricting as the smoke seeped into her airways.

“Fern!” she exclaimed over the loud creaking of the metal beams, her shoulders colliding with the people rushing in the opposite direction as they attempted to escape the deathly flames. She pressed her sleeve closer to her nose and mouth as she hurried towards Fern’s sleeping quarters, her vision blurring slightly.

What sounded like crying caused the girl to slow down slightly, her movements quiet as she tried to listen over the roaring of the fire.

“Fern!” she exclaimed as she pushed open the door leading into the room, her shoulders momentarily slumping in relief as she laid eyes on the scared, young girl, who had tears running down her face as her arms tightly held onto her bear.

“You’re okay, baby,” Aurelia murmured gently as she frantically ripped off her jacket and held it out towards the girl. “Press this against your nose okay? Auntie Aura will get you out of here.” The raven-haired girl didn’t miss a beat as she scooped up the girl in her arms, one hand clutching onto the back of Fern’s head as she held her close to her body.
