“Three out of four people will die tonight. You still think you made the right choice?” Jaha questioned, voice barely audible over the worried shouts of the Arkadians gathering in the room. “Our people are scared, Marcus. We need to tell them something.”
Aurelia moved further in the office to allow the small group in, and planted herself on the small couch present in the corner of the room. Bellamy moved to stand next to the girl.
“We spoke with Raven.” Marcus revealed as he walked into the room and ignored the other man. “When she gets here, we’ll have all our essential personnel.”
“How many spots does that leave us with?” Clarke questioned, her gaze moving between Kane and her mother.
“Including our essential personnel, and the places that we’re holding for the children under sixteen, that leaves us with eighty.” Abby responded.
The blonde sighed, her shoulders falling. “Eighty.”
Jaha scoffed. “I can’t believe we’re talking about sending 364 of our own people to their deaths.”
Aurelia snorted, causing heads to turn her way. She could feel Bellamy's gaze on her from beside her.
“That’s really funny, Jaha,” she spoke as she straightened up, an unimpressed look directed at the man. “Didn’t you do that already? Twice?”
Clarke cleared her throat, possibly in an attempt to diffuse the tension. “We’re lucky they’re giving us any space in this bunker at all,” she said as she turned to face Jaha.
“Look, I don’t like it any more than you do,” Kane added.
“Then let’s fight this!”
“No,” Kane immediately cut off. “Any sort of resistance will cost us our lives. Our best course of action is to hold a lottery for the remaining spots.”
Jaha ran his hands down his face in frustration. “It's not going to work, Marcus.”
“It was your idea.”
“That was for the chance to survive.”
“And how is this any different?” Abby chimed in.
Aurelia felt like she was going to go insane.
“Until twenty minutes ago, our people believed they were safe.” Jaha whisper-shouted as he gestured outside the office. “They let down their guard. They picked out their bunks. They unpacked their bags. They imagined their futures. You try to rip that from them now, and, believe me, they will fight.”
