Chapter 54 Supernova
"Manfred, I'm so glad to see you!" his sister Jennifer exclaims, jumping into her oldest brother's arms.
"I would have taken a cab after all. Why are you going to the airport at night?" retorts Dieckmann as he hugs his adorable, loving sister to his heart.
"Manfred, you know me.
I never interfere.
I'm really patient and don't push anyone.
But, it didn't work out anymore. I'm really worried about him. I couldn't just leave him alone.
I mean, I can still remember the nights when I heard your tears and wished so much to be able to comfort you. But I didn't push you. I am there, but I don't break nuts.
I give people their time.
No matter how worried I am.
He was always quiet, spending most of his time in the beach chair by the sea.
I found that troubling enough.
But it was getting worse and worse.
I started looking for him there when he didn't come home.
He was only a shadow now, Manfred.
The darkness surrounded him.
At some point he stopped talking at all. For two weeks we didn't exchange a word.
And when he refused to eat, I couldn't take it anymore.
I had to inform you. We have to do something.
Manfred, we have to do something," Jenny blurts out.
Manfred, squeezes her even tighter, trying to calm her down:
"You are the only person I would trust with my Sam. Only you, my loving sister.
Because you are so considerate.
Because you calm every wild storm with your warmth.
You give time.
You ask for nothing in return.
You're there when you're needed.
That's why I sent Sam to you. I knew I could count on you.
You give him the time to himself.
Take care of him without pushing him.
And when the time comes, you call me.
I'm here now. Don't worry about anything. I'm here now."
And even though he manages to calm Jenny down a bit, on the drive to their house at the wild dunes, he can't tame his worries.
He dreads the sight.
He doesn't know what Sam's mental state is.
And he reproaches himself for not having worried about it earlier.
Jenny takes her brother's arm when they finally arrive at the house and leads him to the guest room in the attic.
In front of the closed door, she squeezes his arm tightly.
"I hope he's talking to you. Next to his bed is a thermos of broth. Sometimes he drinks at least a little. Maybe you'll be successful. Call me if there's anything I can do. I'll leave you alone now," she says and leaves.
Professor Dieckmann, Sam's German father, opens the door and enters Sam's room.
His eyes immediately fall on the travel bag, still unpacked, standing by the window, ready to leave.
