Louis returned home after his argument with JJ. Louis at this point felt some relief for everything that happened. He knew JJ moved on, it was obvious from how often Mattie with with JJ, JJ even inviting Mattie into JJ's house, something the blonde never did. Louis also felt relief that JJ knew he was done with him.
If Louis were to see JJ again he just hoped it would be because he had to. He was completely done with the blonde, he was ready to move on. Louis was just tired of being in pain.
However, although one thing possibly went okay that day, Louis had to still go home to a house that was grieving, that felt empty.
Henry Brooks was gone, the burden that held on Louis was still very fresh.
When Louis returned home, he saw that Anne's car was there, making anxiety prick at Louis skin. Louis didn't know how he would react seeing Anne. Louis was that saw Henry's last moments, he didn't know if Anne would hate him for that or not. He didn't know if she would blame him for her husband being dead.
When Louis walked in he instantly wanting to become deaf. He could hear the broken sobs in the living room, making Louis so much more wish it was him instead of Henry that got shot.
Obviously not many people would grieve for him if he were gone. JJ wouldn't, Louis knew that. Hell, JJ didn't even grieve about their breakup before falling for someone else so he was sure if he died the blonde would shed maybe two tears before going to Mattie. Henry and Anne would of possibly been upset, but it would go away quickly. They could always just adopt another kid. Leo, Leo would probably be the only one that grieved if it were Louis that died and not Henry. Leo only had Louis left, but Louis knew his little brother would be okay in a few months, just like he is now after the death of their mother.
Louis really, really wished it was him instead of Henry.
When Louis enters the living room he stops in his tracks. Leo was sobbing and trying to support Anne all at he same time. Anne was shushing the boy and trying to control her own sobs, causing Louis heart to feel so much more guilt. If only he didn't go on that stupid trip than Henry would of had his vest and been alive. If Louis weren't such a broken boy than maybe Henry would be alive now.
Louis coughs to make his presence known, than moves to give both Anne and Leo a hug. He didn't need to tell Anne that he knew, that he witnessed it. Atleast not yet. She was in too much pain to hear those words right now.
"I'm so sorry boys. I am so sorry." Anne cries, causing both the Caswell boys to pull Anne closer to them.
They would grieve, and they would grieve together.
It was hours later when they all calmed down that they actually starting talking again. Anne was telling stories to the two boys about Henry. Previous cases he had been on, his favorite moments.
The two boys were cuddled together on the couch, Leo resting his head on Louis shoulder and Louis playing with his brothers hair.
Leo was still sniffling occasionally, Louis and Anne doing the same, but they felt some what better, especially when Anne would tell stories about Henry. It made the boys smile when they heard such stuff about their father. It made them feel as if their father wasn't gone, as if they knew Henry their entire lives.
"You know, when we found out that we were going to adopt you, I swear I never have seen Henry that happy. Not even on our wedding day! He was so excited boys. He cried before we picked you boys up at the airport, he didn't want you guys to see."
"He loved us?" Leo asks, causing Anne to smile and nod.
"Yeah... he did." Louis says.
"How do you know?" Leo asks.
"Because he told me. He told me he loved you Anne. That he loved you Leo. That he loved me. Yeah, he loved us." Louis states, slightly shaking when visions of Henry dying and saying his last words plague Louis mind.
"He loved you boys a lot. We were his family." Anne smiles sadly, messing with the wedding ring on her finger.
They stay like that for awhile, trying to bathe in the comfort that although Henry his gone, and the wound still cuts deep into their hearts, that they were there together.
They were still surviving. They were living. They would live for Henry.
After hours of silence the Caswell/Brooks make cookies together, listening to radio music, trying to take comfort in any moments that they can.
Although Henry wasn't here, they would live. They would smile. The would grow. Because that is what Henry would want. He would want his wife to move on and stay strong. He would want his sons to continue to grow and thrive.
"Anne, can I stir-"
"John Booker Routledge has yet to be found. Police are still searching for the suspect who is accused as murdering Sheriff Peterkin and Deputy Brooks. If anyone sees John Booker Routledge call at-" Louis turns the phone off not wanting to hear anymore of the story.
Because it was false. John B didn't kill anyone. It was Rafe. It was all Rafe.
Louis wondered how long John B had been running. He knew before he left yesterday that John B and the pogues were going to go to the police station to tell them what happened at the airstrip. If that were the case than there was a very lucky possibility that John B had been running for almost 24 hours now.
That would explain why JJ was at his house, he never seemed to be there from what Louis could tell.
If John B were accused of murder he knew the pogues had a plan to get John B away. The pogues never left a pogue behind and he knew that his friends would not allow their leader to be put in prison and behind bars for a crime he didn't commit.
He looked at Anne and saw the devastated expression on her face. She believed what she heard on the radio. Louis was not going to have his mother figure believe one of his friends murdered the Sheriff and her husband.
Louis was going to get John B out of this. He was going to save the accused, even if it meant reliving memories he never wished to speak.
