My eyes began to fill with tears. I still don’t know why. I mean I didn’t want a mate in the first place. So, this means this would be easier. Doesn’t it?
We both remained silent in the room. I was about to step forward to say something. When I felt something fly past my face. It missed hitting my face by inches. I screamed and took a step back. I looked at the direction that it was head and deep in the wall was a black arrow with a note attached to it. I reached to touch it by Ayyan grabbed my arm.
“Don’t touch it! It’s a poisoned arrow.” He cried.
He then ran to the window where the arrow had come from. I followed him and saw a shadowy figure wearing a cloak running into the woods. He was soon followed by a group of wolves.
“Don’t worry, my warriors will get him.” Ayyan said pulling me into his arms.
“Who is he?”
“More like what he is.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Living so close to human territory we have a problem with hunters. Humans that know about werewolves existing. However, they don’t like that we exist. So they are trying to kill us off.” He whispered. “They use weapons that are hard to fight against. Arrows covered in wolfs bane, and a whole lot of other weapons we struggle to fight against.”
“So…that arrow?”
“Is covered in wolf bane. It is a deadly poison that can kill a wolf. I’ll have to get a trained wolf here to retrieve the note and get rid of the arrow. I am only glad it didn’t hit you.” He said hissing. “When I catch the guy who did this he is dead!”
I then smiled and walked over to the arrow.
“Wait! What are you doing? Weren’t you listening? That is poisonous to wolves.” Ayyan said.
I rolled my eyes at him. “Have you lost a few brain cells? Or have you forgotten, I am not a werewolf.”
This caused him to blush. “Oh right. Sorry about that. When you live with wolves 24/7 it kind of gets to you.”
I just rolled my eyes again. I then reached for the arrow I managed to pull the note out. But the back of my hand rubbed against the arrow. As soon as I did I felt my skin burn. I screamed in pain and fell to my knees. I held my burning hand in my other. I looked down and saw a growing black spot on my hand.
“Love, what is it? What has happened?” He said kneeling next to me.
I showed him my hand and he growled.
“I thought you were human?”
“But…but I am human?”
“That death mark would say otherwise. We must hurry. We may have time.”
“Time for what?”
“To get the poison out before it kills you.”
“But you said it only kills werewolves!”
“It does.”
