CHAPTER THREE

“How’re you doing Dani?” Dr Harper asked Dani, after walking into the room and coming over to us. There was already a nurse here, who had prepped Dani, but Dr Harper didn’t come down with us. He crouched down onto his haunches beside me and at head level with Dani, giving her a smile.

“Pretty nervous,” she answered with a slight laugh, but it faltered because of the nerves in her voice.

“Don’t worry, I’m a pro at this,” he tried his best to reassure her. “I’m going to tell you everything I’m doing, so don’t worry that you’re not going to know what’s going on. But I’ll be talking to you throughout the whole thing, you’ve even got Amelia here with you.”

I smiled when he nodded over at me, giving Dani’s hand a gentle squeeze. “And if it helps, you can tell me how stupid I look,” he looked down at himself and Dani laughed. He was in his normal suit trousers, shirt and tie, but he had one of those disposable medical aprons on, a scrub hat and a mask on.

“I might just do that,” Dani smiled at him when he looked back up at her.

“Are you ready to do this kiddo?”

Dani let out a breath and nodded, before looking up at the ceiling. “I just need you to roll on your side towards me,” he stood up and Dani rolled onto her side. “Great,” he gave her once last smile and walked around the bed. “Bring your knees up into your chest and hug them, tilt your head down a little bit too.”

I let go of her hand to let her do what he asked and moved my hand onto her knee, after she got into position. “This might be a little cold,” he lifted up a cloth from the tray beside him, before putting it on her back. “I’m going to give you an anaesthetic to numb the area, it’ll sting a bit, but it won’t hurt that much.” He reached over to the tray beside him and picked up a needle, glancing up at me and giving me a small nod.

“With all the blood they’ve taken, you should be used to a little needle,” I reassured her with a smile. She laughed slightly, before hissing in discomfort when Dr Harper inserted the needle.

“It’ll be numb in a few minutes,” he pulled out the needle and put it back on the tray. “This next part can be quite painful, so let me know if it gets to uncomfortable and we’ll stop for a minute.”

Dani looked over her shoulder and nodded at Dr Harper, before tilting her head back down. “Can you feel this?” He asked and he pressed something against her skin, watching her face for any reaction.

“No,” Dani answered quietly, while shaking her head slightly.

“Okay take a few deep breaths,” he picked up another needle, one that was much bigger than the first one. “So what’s your favourite subject at school?” He asked her suddenly, while slowly pushing the needle into Dani’s back. She closed her eyes and screwed her face in discomfort, so I squeezed her knee gently.

“Why?” She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying to reduce the discomfort.

“Everyone always has something that makes them think of something other than the pain or discomfort of a procedure, for some that’s just talking.”
