CHAPTER FIVE

“No she can’t have a tumour,” I said adamantly while shaking my head. “You must’ve read the images wrong,” I can’t believe that she has a tumour.

“I know it’s hard to wrap your head around, but I checked the images over and over again. I also consulted our best radiologist and he agrees with me,” he told me in a soft voice.

“But this is Dani, she’s a child,” I know anybody can get cancer, but it’s hard to accept that it’s your family.

“I know,” he leant forward and slipped his hand into mine, wrapping his fingers into my palm. “I wish I had something else to tell you, I really do, but I’m certain she has a tumour on her spine.” He sighed and slide his chair closer to me, while running his thumb along my hand.

“She only had back pain,” I was slowly starting to accept that he was right, that Dani does have a tumour.

“The tumour was causing that,” he explained to me, as I looked down at my lap. “It’s still in the early stages Amelia, the radiologists thinks it’s operable and the images are with our best oncologist right now.”

“I can’t believe this,” I sighed and shook my head, before resting my forehead in my palm.

“Just take a second and get your thoughts together, I know your head must be going at a hundred miles an hour. I’ll go get you a drink of water,” he squeezed my hand gently, before standing up. “I’ll be back in a second,” he walked over to the door and quietly left the room.

This seriously can’t be happening, there’s no way her back pain was because she has a tumour. She only had back pain, how can she have a tumour? I just can’t get my head around this, she’s my little sister. When we first came here, cancer wasn’t even one of the remote possibilities that crossed my mind. How am I going to tell her she has cancer?

I raised my head and looked up at the door, as Dr Harper walked in. He walked over to me and smiled, before holding out the cup of water. “Thanks,” I took the cup from him and smiled slightly, as he sat back down.

“I can only imagine how hard this is Amelia, but I promise that I’m doing everything I can for Dani. I’m doing everything that I would want a doctor to do for my sister,” he told me while I took a sip of water.

“Where do we go from here?” I think I’ll be able to process the whole situation better, if I have a clear idea of the steps we need to take.

“The tumour is currently at an operable size, so I have Dani booked in for surgery tomorrow morning. But, like any surgery, there is an element of risk,” he warned me in a serious tone.

“What sort of risk?”

“Well there’s a risk with the anaesthetic like all surgery and with infection, but those sorts of complications aren’t very common.” He lowered his head slightly to run his hand through his hair, before looking back up at me.

“I’m guessing there’s more serious risks,” I can tell by his body language it’s going to get worse.

“There is the chance of nerve damage if the nerves in the spinal cord are damaged during the surgery.”
