CHAPTER SIX

"Hey guys," Dr Harper smiled at us when he walked into the room, before shutting the door behind him. "How're you doing Dani?" He walked over to Dani's bed and looked down at her, setting a file on the bedside cabinet.

"Pretty scared if I'm being honest," she answered him with a small nervous smile.

"I know it's pretty intimidating, but you're in good hands," he tried to reassure her about the surgery. "This oncologist is the best person to perform the surgery, plus I'll be assisting him and we both know how good I am." He smirked down at her playfully, making he laugh for the first time this morning.

"Well that part is questionable," I looked over at Dani and raised my eyebrows jokingly.

"Very funny," Dr Harper laughed sarcastically, as I stood up from the end of Dani's bed. "Before I forget, because you know I'm not very good at things," he smiled at me sweetly. "I need you to sign this so people don't think I did this surgery without your knowledge." He picked up the file he set down when he came in and opened it, before holding it out to me.

"Don't be so dramatic," I rolled my eyes and smiled at him, whilst taking the file from him.

"We've got about twenty minutes, before the nurses come down to get your ready for surgery," he said to Dani and sat down in the chair beside her bed. "So do you have any questions or anything you want me to explain?"

I glanced up at Dani, before taking the pen from the clip at the top of the file and signing the bottom of the consent form. "I don't think so," she told him as I closed the file and handed it back out to Dr Harper.

"Are you sure?" He took the file from me with a smile, before I sat down on the chair on the opposite side of the bed.

"She was asking me this morning what exactly is going to happen," I told him because I knew she wouldn't. She might not have wanted me to say this to him, but I'd rather have him tell her so she isn't too worried.

"No worries, I'll talk you through what's going to happen," he nodded and leant forward. "A couple of nurses will come and get you ready for surgery, they'll just give you a hospital gown to put on. Then they'll take you downstairs to the surgery prep-room, where you'll meet the oncologist that's doing the surgery."

I sat back in my chair and crossed my leg over the other, whilst folding my arms across my chest. I'll feel better hearing what's going to happen, because if I don't, I'll be worrying about it while she's in surgery. And thankfully my friend Maddie is calling down to wait with me, knowing I would probably go insane if I was left on my own.

"You'll then be brought into the surgery room, where you'll have to lie face down on a special curved bed. In the room there will be yours truly," he smiled and put his hand on his chest. "The oncologist, a few nurses and the anaesthetist, who'll give you a general anaesthetic for the procedure. The surgery will last for about an hour and a half and we'll try and remove as much as the tumour as we can. And when you wake up, you'll be one step closer to your normal healthy self," he finished explaining the procedure.

"Does that make you feel better?" I asked and she looked over at me, before smiling and nodding. Well it certainly made me feel slightly happier, but I don't think I'll be completely happy until she's out of surgery.
