CHAPTER SEVEN

"That's good Dani, just keep going you're nearly done," the Physio Dr Austin praised Dani. It was her first session after her surgery yesterday and it was only a quick session, around half an hour, where she just needed to do some leg stretches and to just get out of bed to walk around. "There you go, you're done," he smiled as Dani reached her bed and sat down.

"I'd feel good about it if my back didn't hurt," she complained and lay down, trying to get comfortable again, to help her back pain.

"I know, but it won't hurt so much in our next sessions," he reassured her with a small laugh. "Dr Harper has your next session booked in for Saturday morning, so until then, I've got some exercises and stretches you should try and do." He picked something up from his file on the table, before holding it out to her.

"How often should I do these?" She took the sheet from him and glanced over them, before handing it over to me.

"Whenever you want but try for once a day, the main thing is that you don't spend all day in bed and get up for a bit and walk around. I know you probably think it's stupid that you need to do this, but you'd be surprised at how quickly your muscles can deteriorate."

"If I have to do it I'll do it, as long as it helps me," she smiled at him and sat back against the pillows.

"Well this will help you, you've been stuck in the bed for two weeks, so you need to start using your muscles again." He explained to her, whilst writing something down in the file and then closed it over. "Dr Harper said that you've lost feeling in your legs before your surgery and with the surgery you've had, these exercises will help strengthen your muscles."

I did wonder what the whole point of this was, but Dr Harper thinks it's beneficial and Dr Austin is good at getting Dani up and about. I probably couldn't get her out of bed if I tried, because whenever I tried, she would say her back hurt too much. But at least she's getting up and walking a bit now, instead of lying in bed all day and become weaker.

"I'm going to run up to Dr Harper's office and fill him in on your first session, so I'm sure he'll be down soon to have a chat. Do you have anything you want to ask or talk about before I go?" He picked up his file and glanced between Dani and me, smiling at us. I looked over at Dani, to see if she wanted to ask him anything and she shook her head.

"I think we're good," I looked back at Dr Austin and smiled, shaking my head slightly.

"No problem, if you need anything, you can get one of the nurses or Dr Harper to page me. And I'll see you guys on Saturday," he picked up his file and nodded at us briefly, before walking towards the door.

"Thank you," I said as he opened the door and he turned around, smiling slightly, then he left the room. "That went well," I looked over at Dani and leant forward, resting my forearms on my legs.

"I still don't understand why I need to have it, you can see that I can walk about just fine."

"I know, but Dr Harper has probably seen this before and knows that you need this. For the sake of doing a few exercises and walking around for a bit, it's better just to do them and be safe." I would rather her hate doing them and be fine, than not do them and have to do more physio later.
