narrator's pov.
prom night."y/n, just a few photos," your mom begged. her last baby's prom night had arrived and she had this weird heavy feeling in her chest like she did at tooru's graduation last year.
you weren't thinking much of prom, to be honest. all these years you've been hyping yourself up for it but now that it's actually about to happen, you couldn't care less.
it was a regret to join the prom committee. you didn't even want to go anymore, so technically you had to do all the organising work just so the auditorium would be set up nicely for everyone else.
"fine, fine," you agreed reluctantly. posing awkwardly for her to take a few photos in your dress. your green, homecoming slit dress.
"i told you we could've gotten you a new dress. now these photos are going to look the same as your homecoming ones," your dad complained.
"don't worry, it wouldn't have been worth it anyway," you said, smiling for another photo.
a car beeped outside. opening the door, you saw watari's car sitting next to the pavement with yahaba and his date in the back seat.
watari didn't want to be the only third wheel which is one of the reasons why he offered to pick you up as well. "that's my ride, gotta go."
your dad smiled and waved while you walked down the steps. "have fun, y/n!!"
"please not too much fun, stay safe" your mom smiled nervously. she didn't want a recap of her prom.
"don't mind your mother, have as much fun as you want! ask around, i'm sure someone will have a joint or something" he joked. or maybe it wasn't a joke?
either way, this guy is supposed to be one of the best doctors in miyagi?
your mom closed the door and glared at him, "what on earth possessed me to marry you?"
"um, the fact that we're the nerd and the bad boy trope, duh."
she flicked his forehead. "i should've never helped you spike that punch."
"himari, please, you know you wanted to help me. i was even more irresistible that night."
"apparently so was i, because you couldn't pull out and now we have sakura."
"we have this conversation every prom. what was i supposed to do? cum on your dress?"
"no, you idiot! my leg."
"actually, off topic, but i think sakura's my least favourite," your dad mumbled.
your mom smacked the back of his head, "kaito, what's wrong with you! you're not supposed to have favourites," she reprimanded. "...mine is y/n."
he smiled and yelled "mine is y/n!!"
she thought about it, "sakura's a really close second."
"tooru's definitely my close second."

you leaned back in your seat, drinking punch out of a clear plastic cup.
"is it just me or does this taste weird? shit is way bitter for fruit punch" you complained to the girl sitting across from you. she was in your advanced calculus class but you'd only ever talked once.
"it's because half of it probably is alcohol, i'm sure someone's dumped a shit ton into it by now," she laughed.
kyoutani walked up behind you and grabbed your cup out of your hand. "yeah... about 20% of that is actually punch. i would know, i spiked it," he said, chugging the rest of your drink.
"just because it tastes weird doesn't mean i wasn't gonna drink it, kyō."
"were you?"
"...point made." you sighed, standing up from your chair. "i'm gonna take a walk, nice talking to you guys."
—
you walked out through the back door behind the stage because the front was being guarded by teachers to make sure no one was sneaking off to the bathrooms.
tonight wasn't exactly how you'd expected it to be, and you were just tired (and quite frankly, very overwhelmed).
i don't think there was one specific thing. maybe it was the music being too loud, or the people bumping into you, or maybe just the fact that everyone was with their perfect groups or with their perfect partner, while you were there practically alone.
your heels weren't exactly killing you yet because you'd been sitting down and eating for the past 40 minutes that you'd been in there (longest 40 minutes of your life), but they were uncomfortable to wear so you chose to pull the off. the second your feet hit the ground, however, your eyes started welling up with tears.
you walked across the street to the curb right next to the school's parking lot, sniffling the entire way in a desperate attempt not to cry and ruin your makeup.
sitting under one of the warm parking lot street lamps, you noticed a car driving past slowly and pulling into the parking space behind you. you were scared.
"am i about to get kidnapped?" you thought to yourself, standing up and walking back across the street to the side where the school building was.
the car door opened and out stepped a tall man in a black suit.
you squinted, "is that? no, it can't be."
"rin?""y/n," he spoke with a soft grin plastered onto his face. "how did i know you'd be that one kid that sits on the curb outside prom?"
"it's my coming of age movie prom scene, let me live it," you said jokingly.
"then i think this is the part where i tell you that you're not like other girls, y/n," he laughed, jogging over to you while shoving the car keys into his pants pocket. "wait, baby, were you crying?"
you breathed a shaky breath. "i'm fine now," you told him, moving forward to hug him. his hand resided on the back of your head, pulling it closer into his chest while he kissed along your temple and soft tears fell from your eyes.
"you look beautiful tonight," he whispered, kissing just under your eye at the top of your cheekbone where a new tear sat.
you couldn't stay upset. not when your sweet boyfriend came all the way to miyagi just for you, and just to be there for your prom night.
"you got your bag and shoes?" rintarou asked.
"right here," you smiled and wrapped your arms around his neck. "are you thinking what i'm thinking?"
"let's get out of here."
