Flufftober Day 7: Meddling Friends

Skylar and I were in catering eating when Kenny walked in. She must have noticed me stealing a glance at him when he wasn't paying attention.

"Are you ever going to tell him?" Skylar asked.

"I don't know what you're talking about," I said.

"Suit yourself," Skylar said. "So, how do you feel about catching a movie tomorrow night?"

"Yeah, I'm down," I said. "What do you wanna see?"

"The new Halloween movie just came out," Skylar said.

"Oh, yeah, I forgot about that," I said.

"Then it's a date," Skylar said.

The next day...

I was waiting in the hotel lobby for Skylar.

Me: Where are you?

Sky: Running behind. I'll meet you there.

It was just like her to be running late.

I got an Uber for myself and headed to the movie theater.

Me: Just got here.

I thanked the driver before shutting the door.

"Harper."

I turned around when I heard my name.

"Oh, hey, Kenny," I said. "What are you doing here?"

"Waiting on the Bucks," Kenny said. "What about you?"

"Waiting on Skylar," I said. "We're supposed to see a movie but of course she's running late."

"Yeah that sounds like her," Kenny said.

I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket.

"Hey, are you on your way?" I asked when I answered.

"No," Skylar said. "I'm not gonna be able to make it and neither are the Bucks."

"But I...what?" I asked.

"Let me know how the date goes," Skylar said. "Bye."

The line went dead.

"Son of bitch," I said.

"Everything okay?" Kenny asked.

"They set us up," I said.

"What?" Kenny asked.

"That was Skylar," I said. "Her and the Bucks aren't coming."

"Oh," Kenny said.

We were quiet for a moment.

"Well, um, do you want to see a movie anyway?" Kenny asked.

"Really?" I asked.

"Yeah, I mean, we're already here so we might as well," Kenny said. "What movie do you want to see?"

"Can we see the new Halloween?" I asked.

"Sure," Kenny said.

We got our tickets and our snacks before heading into the theater. We picked two seats close to the back.

Later...

We were halfway through the movie and I swore I caught Kenny looking at me a couple times. Our hands brushed against each other when I reached for my drink. That's when I finally caught him looking over at me. I gave him a small smile.

I thought I saw him take a deep breath before I turned back to the screen. Next thing I knew, his arm was around my shoulders.

"You're so cheesy," I whispered.

"If it's not okay I-"

He started to take his arm away, but I grabbed his hand and pulled his arm back down before leaning more into him. That's how we stayed for the rest of the movie.
