Imagine the first bit of this was a year ago :]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NIKI POV:
"Niki? We need to talk to you," My dad calls.
I roll off my back and stand up, leaving my phone on my bed, still on. It probably won't take long.
I walk into the living room and see my parents sat together, and frown. Them in the same room? Not fighting? Wow.
"Niki, sit down," My mum says, emotionless.
I do, and look at them warily.
"So, you might have noticed us fighting a bit lately," Dad begins.
A bit? Mm, have to disagree.
"And we've sat down, and talked a lot, and we think it would be best for the relationship, the family, if we spent time apart," He says carefully.
"We only want the best for you, and we've decided to seperate for a while. We don't know how long, but it might become a divorce," Mum says gently.
"So you're splitting up? Don't baby me, be honest," I say flatly.
"Yes, pretty much," She nods.
"Ok. Can I go now?"
I get up and walk away in silence without waiting for them to respond.
I'm not stupid. I knew it was coming. We haven't eaten as a family since the Christmas before last, I spent the last one being moved from house to house, either with my mum or with my dad. I just wish they told me sooner.
PRESENT DAY
STILL NIKI POV:
Tears begin to pool in my eyes. The news was expected, but I didn't want it to happen. I severely underestimated the pain this announce would bring.
"Niki? Niki, it's ok to be sad," My mum says, going into her work mode. Guess she's good at dealing with sad kids, being a therapist and all.
"No- just- let me process this," I say thickly, wiping tears from my cheeks. "I'm going upstairs,"
When I'm in my room, door shut, the first thing I do is call my friends.
Puffy picks up first, followed by Minx, then Rihanna.
"Hey! You ok?" Puffy says first.
"Not really," I respond.
"Did it happen?" Rihanna says straight away.
"Mhm," I nod.
"I'm coming over. See you soon," She says, hanging up.
"Wait what?" Minx says, sounding half asleep.
"My- my parents are getting a divorce," I hiccup, fresh tears rolling down my face.
"Noo, Niki," Puffy says, sounding heartbroken.
"Right, seen you in 2 minutes," Minx says, also hanging up. Minx and Rihanna live either side of our house, so it won't be too hard for them to come over. I'm glad they are. Friends are better in real life than on a call.
"You know what? I'm coming over too. Can't have anyone stealing my girlfriend," Puffy jokes.
"See you soon," I laugh through tears.
Only a few seconds after I put my phone down, the doorbell rings. Probably Rihanna or Minx. Or both of them, by the sound of 2 sets of footsteps tracking up the stairs to my room.
One of them opens the door, and they both sit down next to me. Suddenly, I'm wrapped in a hug from both sides, and I smile. They've always been there when my parents couldn't be.
Take when I had to do a recital for a school performance. Mum was busy with work, Dad was at a job interview, and my brother wasn't bothered to come. But Rihanna and Minx got front row seats, and came backstage after.
Maybe friendships make families, not the people who's blood you share.
