Termly exams were over, but holiday was yet to begin. Esther had started coming to school more regularly but she kept to herself. Shola was exhausted from trying to engage her in conversations or anything for that matter.

She started spending her days with her nose stuck in a book and earpiece in her ears.

'Tap that girl', the class had gone quiet as the song she had playing finished. So before she could be tapped she raised her head and came eye to eye with Snr Irene at her class door.

She quickly took out the earpiece while standing up. She didn't recall doing anything.

'Follow me', Irene turned and kept walking. Soon they were at the back of Ss3 class.

'I see you've been trying to play the victim game. Getting everyone to feel sorry for you and me to look like a bad person. I called you here to tell you that it worked, congratulations', she gave a mocking clap.

Whatever Esther had in mind this was definitely not it. But she held her tongue. The quicker the conversation or whatever this was was over, the quicker she could go back to her class.

'You don't have anything to say?', she shook her head while staring at the ground. She wasn't in mood to play any games with anyone.

'It's fine, you can go', Esther turned and began walking away.

'Did she just walk out on you?!', she heard someone shout and stopped not wanting any trouble.

Soon enough she was roughly dragged by her shirt by one of the girls she recognized as Irene's friend, the tug making her stumble.

Irene began laughing, enjoying the whole scene. Esther realized too late that she had been set-up. And with she and Daniel no longer in talking terms she was in soup.

'I didn't walk out on her Senior, she asked me to go-',

'And you left without an apology? See wings o!', she pushed Esther's head with force. Esther said nothing throughout the insults she rained on her.

Then she felt the place go quiet, the girls didn't leave but they had stopped screaming at her.

'If you have enough time on your hands as to be bullying a junior student then I suggest you put that time to use for the benefit of the school. Esther Onuoha, report to the nurse's office. The rest of you, yes you Irene inclusive wait for me at the assembly ground', the VP acad said from the corridor where he watched most of the drama.

'Sir she walked out on us when we were talking to her-',

'I did not ask you for any explanations, move!!', the all went to where each was directed to wait for the VP.

Esther narrated what had transpired that afternoon to the VP who in turn asked Irene. She tried to deny it at first but the sight of his signature whip discouraged her immediately.

He was very strict with discipline, and the one person her father couldn't intimidate.

'As you've chosen to be free, the last portion on the farmland. You have exactly three days to make that area sand level. Those boys that claim to love you, if I catch any of them there both you and them will understand me better. Esther go to your class', she quickly did as she was told.

Walking away she stopped as she saw Snr Daniel standing in her way.

'Good afternoon senior', she greeted and tried to walk around him. He simply snagged her arm and dragged her with him.

She didn't know what to make of this or where they were going but today was a good day as any to call whatever they were doing off and go their separate ways.

School had always been a boring routine with the occasional spikes of fun, never had she hated the spotlight like she did at the moment.

He stopped at a deserted hallway of the school and turned to look at her.

His look was very uncomfortable, she couldn't hold his gaze so she looked away. She heard a humorless chuckle from him.

'So you can't look at me anymore?', his voice sounded off. She looked up and saw the look of sadness on his face.

'It's not that, it's..', she trailed off.

'It's what?',

'I can't do this anymore', she suddenly said.

'Can't do what exactly?', he asked straightening up.

'This, our friendship is costing both of us a lot. I can only say on my part, I've been abused and bullied more times than I care for. I can only imagine what you go through on your own, then adding my own pains. No, let's put this to rest so you can focus on your exams and not think about me or whatever is going on with me',

She looked away while she spoke.

'Look at me and say that again', she looked up but words failed her. Daniel looked heartbroken, and tears filled her eyes when she realized she was the cause of it.

'I'm sorry',

'Sorry for what?',

'I'm so sorry, this is all my fault. I'm sorry!', she ran off before he could get a hold of her.

He ran his hand over his afro in frustration. That had not gone according to his non-existent plan.

He needed to find her, and find her fast.
