'Esther Onuoha, the VP wants you in his office right now', her form teacher said as she walked into the class.
'Yes ma', she walked briskly to the office, wondering what she had done.
'Good morning sir', she greeted him when she entered his office.
'Yes, so there's a man outside who claims to be your father and wants to see you and your brother. He also mentioned taking you people out of school for the day', Esther was stupefied for lack of better words.
'Sir?',
'He's outside, you may have passed him on your way in here',
'Sir can I call my mother on your phone?', she didn't know where the boldness came from but she had to act quick as her brother stepped into the office.
'Hello mummy',
'Nne ke ihe owu? What happened?'',
'Mummy VP acad said one man came here saying he's our father and he wants to take us out of school-',
'What father? Out of where? Enyi sit down there I'm on my way, inshort infront of your school gate. Don't even think about going anywhere, give the phone back to VP', she did as she was asked.
'Good morning ma.... Of course... That is why I called them here... Yes they'll remain here till you get here.... I'll inform the security, of course. I'm expecting you', he hung up and ushered them to seats in his office.
Within minutes they heard their mother's voice.
'Wait Nduka, you are the one they sent to come and kidnap my children? You've grown to think I won't forget my hand on your face abi? Like something is wrong with all of you collectively? Chill na, the police are almost here!', the said Nduka quickly stood up at the mention of the police.
'Aunty calm down it has not gotten to that level-',
'Who is your aunty? You don't know your father's sisters? Chere nunu, the Nneka you knew before is long gone. You haven't seen anything. Officer see him here, broad day light kidnapping. He told the VP he was their father, that he wants to take them out of school. Aturu m asi?',
'Officer I can explain-',
'You can explain at the station, oya move!', he was dragged out of the school premises and the security officials were gathered and given strict warning fr both the VP and their mum not to let anybody that wasn't their mother into the compound to pick them up.
'I'll see you after school, thank you VP for your help',
'You're welcome. You'll be surprised how many attempted kidnapping have occurred with this method. Have a great day, all of you back to your classes!', the students that gathered due to the sirens and teachers went back to their classes.
Esther and Chima did the same thing. After school their mum was waiting for them at the school gate.
'Mummy good evening, what happened?', Chima greeted as he saw her first.
'Nothing o, I just felt that I should start picking you people up from school',
'Argh mummy that will be stressful for you na!',
'It's better I am stressed and still have my children with me than relaxed and those people will succeed in their plans of taking you with them',
'Mummy God forbid o! I'm not going anywhere with people that I don't know, especially with how they treated you. Even if you later give in I'm not going o', Esther said pulling her ear.
'Is it me you're pulling ear for? I'll soon remove it for you', Esther gave a reluctant smile. Her mum was trying to cheer her up.
Stepping out of the gate Uncle Ugo's car was parked there.
'Is this not that mopol's vehicle?',
'Yes mummy',
'How come it's here?',
'You know Snr Daniel schools here and the mopol allows him use it. That's how he has been taking us anywhere we wanted to go',
'Interesting, oya let's go home',
'Good evening ma', someone greeted and they turned to see it was Daniel.
'Ehe nwa m, how are you?',
'I'm fine ma, ma can I drop you off?',
'We are going to the shop o, not home. It's too far from the barracks',
'It's no problem ma, I'm supposed to get some things from that area before I return the car this evening',
'Alright then, you people should enter the car. Where is Shola?',
'They left before us, I was waiting for Chima',
'Okay let's go then',
Daniel drove them to the shop, through the ride he kept glancing at Esther with the rear mirror.
'Daniel, I want to ask your uncle something. Can I have his number?', she said as the kids came down from the car.
'Okay ma, 090' he gave her the number.
'Thank you, hope your exams are going well?',
'Yes ma, waec ends in two weeks',
'Thats good, it's finally rounding off. Okay let me not keep you here with mindless chatter. Greet your mother for me',
'Okay ma, good night ma', he drove off.
Esther kept her head down through the evening, she knew her mum was going to ask her about Daniel and she didn't know if she wanted to talk about him yet.
She told her mum everything from the start, but she didn't tell her about the day in the hall.
'It's like the both of you have reconciled', her mum asked as they packed up.
'Not exactly, it's not like we were before sha. But he's no longer angry with me though',
'Okay, have you forgiven him?', that was a question she was not expecting. Yes she had managed to get angry with him after a while, she didn't know her mum noticed.
'I guess so, I'm not holding a grudge or anything',
'Make sure you forgive and forget. It won't end well for either of you if you're harboring old hurts. Just look at what me and these people are doing',
'I know mum, and I'm sorry you have to go through this',
'Hapu oku Biko, we all have our crosses to bear. Maybe I haven't forgiven them as I told myself all these years. We'll be fine. God is in control',
They packed up their shop before heading home.
