'Bia nwa m, come and sit with me for a minute',

She'd come out to check where her mother was so she could lock the doors and found her sitting outside.

'Okay', she sat next to her. The night breeze was very enjoyable. She pulled the band holding her braids out, so the hair was open for the breeze.

'I want to ask you one question nne, what exactly is happening between you and Daniel these days? I know I try to give you some privacy but something is off. Talk to me, what is the problem?',

She didn't answer immediately. Yes they'd been 'official' since his graduation day, but recently something has been off. Maybe the distance between them was finally showing its effects, she didn't know.

'I honestly don't know mummy. One day we're good then the next we're just there. It used to bother me but right now I just don't know. I just take whichever one comes and roll with it',

'Have you talked to Daniel about it? Cause one sided conversations are never a good thing',

'Not directly, I just don't know how to bring it up and not sound clingy or over doing it. I mean he's in the university, with lectures and all going on. I just don't want to add anything to his plate',

'Hmmm, I know you guys are still young and I might not be in the best position to give you advice on relationships as you can see how mine turned out. But I want to strongly ask that you communicate better, or what you people are trying to build will collapse before the plan is drawn',

'Thank you mummy, and you can always give me advice o. Even though I may not agree, but still give them to me', she laughed as her mum pulled her into a side hug.

He was meant to call her an hour ago. Instead of letting it go as usual, she decided to call him.

The phone rang the first time without an answer, by the second ring the phone was answer but instead of his sleep laden voice, a girl picked the call.

'Umm hello?',

'Hello, umm Danny is sleeping',

'Danny?',

'Yea, I don't think I should wake him up though. You can leave a message, I'll make sure he gets it',

'No no, it's fine. It's fine. He should call me when he wakes up though',

'Yea, let me place this back on the bed before he wakes up',

The call cut and she felt numb. Of all the things in her head this was the least expected.

If he wanted to be seeing his age mates or university mates he would at least have the decency to break up with her first.

Choosing not to hurt herself more than she was already was, she set her phone done and tried to sleep.

By morning she still didn't get any calls from Daniel. She didn't call him either.

Two weeks later there was no communication between them, she'd seen her NECO results which was all B's. Jamb was around the corner, so also was her school of nursing exams.

She needed to focus.

They've been through this route before, but deep down she'd settled that they were over.

Her books were in her front at the restaurant, today was Sunday. They only sold drinks on Sunday evening, as it was afternoon the place was closed and she needed all the peace and quiet she could get.

The back door opened and she heard Chima call her name.

'I'm here', she didn't bother looking up. She continued writing on her jotter, she didn't look up when she felt someone looking at her. Thinking it was Chima she didn't look up.

'Say what you want to say and leave her biko! You'll just be blocking breeze', she still didn't look up.

'Is that how you'll greet me after almost three weeks of no communication?', her biro dropped from her hand as she stood up in a hurry.

Daniel was here in the flesh.

'Hi',

He laughed as he pulled her in for a hug. She hugged him back.

'I've really missed you',

'Yea', he turned her face to look her in the eye.

'What's wrong?',

'Nothing, when did you get back?',

'Yesterday evening, tell me what the problem is. Please, and don't say nothing. I know I contributed greatly to this distance between us'

'I don't want to talk about it, now is not a good time-'

'Please, I'm sorry. I miss you, I miss us. I know I caused this, but please talk to me',

She just looked down at her feet. Her mum's words about communication came to mind.

'The last time I called you, a girl answered the call. And I called very late at night, she even said she had to drop your phone on your bed before you woke up. You're not a deep sleeper to the best of my knowledge, then I requested you call me when you woke up but you didn't either. So I let you be, because recently I've been feeling like a nuisance to you. Maybe we need a break from each other or-',

'No, dear God no. No, that's not going to work. I wish I can say I know when this call went down but I don't. The girl is most like Betty and she's my roommate's sister who doesn't understand the concept of personal space. I'm so sorry for making you feel like a nuisance, you're anything but that. Please I'm sorry',

In all her life of knowing him she never knew he could talk so much at the same time. University was truly changing him.

'Listen Daniel, I want to say that it's fine but it's truly not. Can we please sit down?',

'Okay', they sat where she was seating initially.

'Don't doubt my feelings for you, they are very much still present and appreciated.  But this took the cake Dee, like she took your call. Called you Danny? Like you're on pet names with her or something, then she's comfortably talking like she was looking after you. If reverse was the case you'd be here the next morning. To kill somebody!',

'She called me what?',

Too much peace 🥴🥴

Drama time!!!
