Peter's POV
Courtney looked horrible. Her hair was knotted and her clothes were baggy. Her eyes were either blank or warily. She wouldn't let anyone execpt Bucky and Sam get near her.
Mostly Bucky.
Sam was in the kitchen with M.J., Happy, Auny May, and I. The two of them were sitting on the couch in the living room. He had just finished explaining everything.
If only I had realized that Mysterio was toying with me sooner and not gotten hit by the train. I could have been back at the hotel and gotten Courtney before she was even... Well, we don't really know what happened, but it could only have been him.
Who else would have targeted her?
"I'll talk to her and see if I can help. I'm trained to know how to get broken soliders back up." Happy told him.
"Courtney isn't a solider. Trust me, I know the difference." Sam said.
"Not every man is a solider, but every solider is a man." M.J. said dully.
Everyone gave her a look.
She shrugged.
"TELL ME!" Courtney yelled.
"What the heck?" Sam muttered as he ran over.
Bucky was laying on his stomach with Courtney on his back, pinning his arm to the ground with one hand and the other on the couch, which was pinning his metal one.
"Courtney, what are you doing!?" Sam demanded.
"Where is Steve?" She asked him.
"Captain America? Didn't he die last week?" Happy asked in confusion.
"He what?" Courtney asked softly, her grip loosening.
"You idiot!" Sam hissed, punching Happy in the shoulder before walking over.
Bucky rolled over, dropping Courtney unceremoniously on the ground. He looked at us and glared.
"Get out."
We all nodded quickly and left, hiding- I mean, waiting, in my room.
Courtney's POV
"He wrote a letter and told me to give it to you." Sam said, handing me a white envelope.
I opened it and started reading:
Dear Courtney,
I know you're probably a little annoyed that I didn't tell you, but you're always over dramatic, so I don't have any sympathy for you.
I smiled lightly. Of course he didn't.
I do however, feel bad that I won't be able to see what a great hero you'll become. I hope you are able to use the shield to make more peace and spread more hope than I was able to. You always seem to have a knack for one upping me.
Even when I was with Peggy, I considered coming back every day so that I could spend more time with you. I'm sorry that I never chose to do that.
The best parts of my life were those two years we spent as fugitives together. Even if sometimes I wanted to strangle you.
Anyway, I was doing some research the other day and I found something interesting. It probably would have been better if I told you in person, but I can't. Either way, this is a special occasion.
Have no fear, I will always persevere!
-SteveI laughed, wiping the tears that had found their way onto my checks. So he found out where I gotten that question from.
I just... I can't believe he is gone.
I turned the letter over and found something small written on the back.
I'm glad I had a daughter like you.
