"Elijah, please sit

"Elijah, please sit." Alejandro said as I entered his office. Regret was evident on his face, putting my nerves on edge.

"Alejandro, what's this about?" I asked rather concerned at the way he was acting.

"I want to discuss our alliance." I nodded my head. "We both came into this with one goal. To get revenge on Miguel. Now that is done, I've been thinking. I believe that it's will be best, for both of our mafias, if this alliance officially came to an end."

My eyes widened ever so slightly, however not a noticeable amount. I was admittedly shocked by his words but I had seen it coming. It was inevitable that once Miguel was dead out alliance would die out so I don't know why I'm so surprised.

I guess I just thought that since we worked so well together, we would continue as we were.

"I agree." I lied. Ending this alliance is the last thing I want to do.

"Of course, if you ever need anything, my family will be happy to help. You have been a pleasure to work with Elijah. You and your men have become a part of my family and we will always seek to look out for you. Even though the official alliance is over, our families will remain friends for many years to come."

"Likewise." I replied, reaching over the desk that separated us and shaking Alejandros hand, still unsettled by this quick agreement.

"Thank you." He said.

"Thank you." I replied with a smile. A genuine smile as although this is technically the end, Alejandro has been nothing but good to me. He's taught me so much in so little time. He's been like a father to me and I couldn't have been more grateful.

I lifted my body up form the chair I was sat in, about to head to the door when Alejandro cleared his throat, stopping me in my tracks.

"How much do you love her?" He said. My stomach dropped as I spun on my heels in order to face him.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

"How much do you love my daughter?"

A slight fear passed through me, but the calmness his features held eased my nerves. I knew it would only be a matter of time before he found out.

"More that you can imagine." I whispered, almost afraid to admit it to him. I don't get intimidated, ever. But Cecilia's father has always been able to make me slightly nervous.

He looked me in the eyes, and sighed. He brought his hands up to his face and pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Elijah," He shook his head slowly, "You know I can't allow this."

"Why not?" I asked, needing a valid reason. A reason that was greater than him not trusting me with his daughter.

"It's not that I don't want you two to be together. In all honesty, you're the only man I trust to look after my daughter for the rest of her life."

"Then what's the problem?" I demanded. My fists clenching, unable to fathom why he isn't allowing this to happen.

"I made a promise. To my family, after Miguel married into another mafia. I said, that for as long as I was Don, I wouldn't permanently join my mafia to anyone else's. You being with and subsequently marrying my daughter would go against my promise and I'm a man of my word, Elijah. You know that better than anyone." He said, sending me a sorry look.

My anger quickly subsided after realising he made a promise. Promises are a huge part of my life and i wouldn't be where i was today without loyalty and keeping to my word. I know how much this must mean to Alejandro and I respect him enough to listen to his command. As painful as it may be, I understand why he is doing this.

It brakes my heart, knowing I can't fully be with Cecilia. But I know that one day, when she becomes Don, I will be able to make her mine.

I didn't care how long it would take for Alejandro to retire. I would wait. I'd wait a thousand years if it meant I could be with Cecilia for just one more second of my life.

"What!" She yelled.

"He promised your family."

"Oh my god. No." She sunk down onto her bed.

"Yes."

"No, Elijah. No, I can't. I can't live without you." She said, a single year trailing down her face.

"Amor, don't cry." I whispered wiping her tear with the pad of my thumb.

"I need you." She said with a croaky voice.

"And you'll have me. We just need to wait until you take over the family." I said in an attempt to comfort her, and myself for that matter.

"But that could take years." She sobbed. Just the sound of her cries was enough to make my eyes water, but I needed to hold it together. For her.

"I would wait a whole lifetime for you." I smiled, resting my forehead against hers. She took a deep breath and started me dead in the eyes.

"You know what this means?" She asked.

I shook my head in response, slightly confused.

"It means we'll have limited contact. We won't ever see each other, Elijah. Only at the annual balls. And even though our family's are friends, we'll still be fighting. That's just how our lives work."

I knew all of this. I just was refraining form admitting it to myself.

"What are you trying to say?" I asked, even though I knew the answer.

"I'm saying that these are our last few days together for the next few years."

My eyes couldn't hold back the tears any longer but Cecilia's hand was there to catch them. She kissed them away before moving back to look in my eyes.

"I'll wait for you." She whispered against my lips.

"So will I." I replied before pulling her into my arms. Her scent consumed me, her body warmed me. Her presence in that moment reassured me that everything would work out.

No matter how hard it is. Or how long it takes. It will be her and I. Always and forever. It may be hard, but like I'd told her many times before. I'd do anything for her.
