The Distance

Ava was awoken as Marks baby monitor went off beside her as he was babbling to himself as she went to his nursery.

Ava picks Mark up out of his crib as her phone buzzes as she gets a message that Amelia was doing Herman's surgery as she took Mark into her room. She placed Mark onto her bed as he crawled over to Jackson waking him up as he looked at his wife rushing around there room.

"Hey what time is it?" Jackson asks as he pulls Mark into his side.

"Umm almost seven." Ava says as she quickly glances at the clock on her night stand as she quickly got changed.

"Then why are you rushing around we don't need to be at the hospital for another hour?" Jackson says as Ava looked at him.

"Amy's doing Herman's surgery today I promised her I'd be there. So I'm going to need you to get Mark ready and to daycare you that?" Ava asks him.

"Yeah of course I'll see you later." Jackson says as Ava pecks him on the lips as she kisses marks forehead.

"Mommy love you I'll see you both later." Ava says as she hurries out of the door as Jackson lifts Mark above his head.

"Another reason for why I married your mommy is because she's always supportive." Jackson says as he starts tickling Mark who was giggling loudly.

Ava sat with Meredith and Maggie as Amelia began her surgery. "You all come up here and you watch surgeries. Why?" Maggie says as she looks at both of the sister in laws.

"Not just surgeries... the big surgeries, the whale surgeries, the rare ones, the crazy ones. " Ava tells her as Meredith continues.

"I mean, you're on the edge of your seat.The patient could die. This is life or death. The adrenaline, the rush..." Meredith says as Maggie looks at both of them.

"Okay, so you watch, like, the worst day  of a person's life like a movie." Maggie says as they both look at each other offended.

"No, not like a movie. That's insulting." Meredith says to her sister.

"This is not entertainment. "Movie." Oh, okay. This is where the good part starts. Shh." Ava says to them as she focuses back on Amelia.

Ava watches Amelia closely as she hadn't moved in 15 minutes as she hears Owen and Richard talking beside her as the mood changed as April,Mason and Jackson walk in.

"April." Owen says as Ava looks as April sits beside her.

"I-I'm not working. I'm... I'm just...I'm not ready to work yet." April says to them as Ava gives her a small smile focussing on Amelia.

"No, no, no, it's fine. I'm just... I'm glad to see you." Owen says to her.

"I'm just gonna sit. Dr. Herman was with me on my worst day. I just wanted to be with her for hers." April says to them.

"How's this going?" Jackson asks as he watches his wife.

"Uh, she's trying to dissect around the fornix. But she still has a long way to go." Richard says to them.

"So, why are they not operating?" Mason asks as they all look at each other.

"If I go any further posteriorly, I violate the. hypothalamus.If I take a lateral approach, I hit the carotids.If I go inferiorly and I wreck her optic apparatus...I am lost here. I am lost in the forest. There is no clear path.I am trying to find a way to keep her whole, Edwards.I can't move without letting a piece of her go." Amelia says as Ava puts on a mask and walks into the O.R.

"Dr. Shepherd." Ava says looking at her sister.

"Dr. Shepherd-Avery. What do you need?" Amelia says looking at her younger sister.

"I thought I could help, maybe be a sounding board. We could work through whatever it is you're stuck on." Ava says to her sister as she meets her eyes.

"Kill the intercom, please." Amelia says as she turns back to her sister.

Dr. Shepherd-Avery,step over here, please. Edwards, would you mind taking a step back?You can be a big help. I need you to call our brother. Tell him he needs to get on a plane. He's in D.C., so if he goes now, he could be here in, what, six hours, seven?" Amelia says as she looks at Ava.

"I'm not sure that's the best idea." Ava says as Amelia looks at her.

"I am in over my head.I made a mistake. I took on an impossible task, and my hubris is going to kill her. Please.Get him on the phone. Get him on a plane. Get him here. Now." Amelia says as she look at Ava.

Ava looks at Amelia as she grows more worried and panics. "Ava you need to call Derek you need to get him here. I thought I could do the impossible but I can't i got in too deep." Amelia says Ava looks at her Sister.

"Amy stop it. You've got into your head that Derek is better than you. You are both amazing surgeon and your just as good as he is. And I was there when he was in the exact same position you are now. He had this smart and beautiful spinal tumour but he stood there worried as he couldn't decide what the right move was and he could've paralysed." Ava says as Amelia looks at her.

"I know that tumour he has hung up on their bedroom wall." Amelia says as Ava smiles slightly.

"Because he found a way to make it work." Ava says to her.

"Yes which is why I need him here." Amelia says to Ava as she looks at her sister.

"This is your plan and your tumour you know it inside and out. Derek doesn't he's not the one who studied it for months you are. He would kill her if he came but you still have a chance. You know what you need to do just take a breath and think what the next step is. You believed in the impossible when a lot people gave up Derek probably would've too but you didn't. I believe in you and now your the only one who can do this and you don't need anyone you've got this Amy. So what happens next?" Ava says as she looks at her sister.

Ava stands watching Amelia as she takes out the whole tumour as Ava smiles at her as Edwards suddenly passes out as Amelia looks at her sister.

"Could you scrub in? There's no else I would want by my side as I finish this." Amelia says as Ava smiles nodding.

Ava scrubbed in with Amelia as she finished up the last part of the surgery placing the seeds into the brain to kill any cancerous cells that were still there and to stop the tumour reoccurring.

Ava was sat on the chair in Marks nursery as she read to him as he fell asleep on her as Jackson walked in. "Looks like he was tired." Jackson says as Ava looks down at her son sleeping against her chest.

"I guess he was we weren't even halfway through the book." Ava says as she smiles at Jackson as she puts Mark into his crib as the two headed down to get some food.

A/N- Hey guys So I've been thinking about writing another greys story alongside this one if you wanted and if you would who would you want the love interest to be?

And if any of you had any ideas for this book because I feel like there not much going on with Ava or Jackson at the moment? So any ideas could be appreciated or what you'd like to read if there's any storylines?
