"It's getting dark. We should probably go back soon," suggests Murphy.
"It is not getting dark," I retort, rolling my eyes. "You're just hungry."
"Of course I am. We've been walking for at least six hours."
I check my watch. "Actually, it's been less than four."
Octavia chuckles.
"Sorry, Princess," spits Murphy. "We don't all have silver jewelry to tell the time. Not all of us had a rich Daddy."
Before I can react, Bellamy shoves him into the nearest tree. "Shut up, Murphy."
Murphy's smirk disintegrates as he lifts himself off the thick trunk and shoots me a look. I give him one back, glaring at him until he looks away.
"How about we take a snack break," suggests Adam, perhaps trying to lighten the tension. "Then we'll continue to search."
"Sounds good," agrees Murphy.
I hesitate before agreeing. "Fine. But as soon as we're done- "
"We know. No wasting time," says Adam.

Once we're finished snacking, we continue on. Bellamy doesn't talk to Murphy, Adam doesn't throw any spears, and I don't have any laughing fits. As we walk in silence, me leading the way, I find myself shivering. The lack of noise is biting at my nerves.
As we continue to venture through the thick, buggy woods, I begin to miss the loud laughing of Adam and Octavia and the strategic planning of Murphy and Bellamy. The noises were soothing in a way-they made things seem more normal. Now that everyone is quiet, the shady forest feels eery and unwelcoming. All I want for a moment is for someone to talk, or sing or whistle or something.
But when I hear the horrible, ear-shattering scream, I want nothing more than for the silnce to return.
