"Lay her on the cot," I order to the kids carrying Alex. Her limp body doesn't move, and her pale eyes stay unblinking.
"Alex, stay with me," I beg, picking the bottle of disinfectant up off the floor.
"Back up. She needs space," I tell her worried friends. All of them obey except one. Instead of stepping backwards, she walks towards me, anger blaring in her dark, mocha eyes. Her hair is the same brown, and it falls over her shoulders in loose waves. She is slightly shorter than me and her skin is a few shades darker than mine.
"This is your fault," she says. "You were supposed to find her and bring her back. You told us the grounders only attacked when we were on their territory. Well why do you think they took Alex? And why would they want to hurt her like this?" Her accusatory words turn into pleading ones as she talks, her face slowly growing softer. Tears roll silently down her soft cheeks. "You need to save her. She needs to live."
"The only way I can do that is if you give me some space so I can operate right now," I tell her calmly.
For a moment, she just stands in front of me. She doesn't back away until her friend says: "come on, Chlo. She needs space." Chloe takes a few steps backwards and joins her friends, tears still dripping from her large eyes.

Sorry for the short chapter. I feel like writing about the operations and medical assistance in this book is getting kinda boring. What do you think? Should I try to skip some of it?
