Once the cell doors opened for dinner, everyone stared as Dina and Vi walked down the corridor and towards the refectory, they seemed scared of Vi after her assault this morning, not knowing the full story. Vi and Dina did what they usually would and cut the queue, getting their food and sitting at their table. As the two lovers sat in silence, Dina could feel the eyes of what felt like everyone burn into them, but more so Vi. As she looked up, Dina noticed that Vi could feel it too as her grip tighened around her fork and she looked down, anger building up.
"Vi... Relax"
Dina said, taking Vi's free hand in her own and squeezing it reassuringly.
Vi looked up at her lover and her eyes softened, Dina's attempt at calming her down had worked. They both continued eating their food peacefully, ignoring the stares from other inmates. As Vi tried her best to keep her cool for her lovers sake, she heard whispers from the table over. Talk about how Vi would be strung up for attacking the new inmate publicly arose around them in different forms as different conversations entered Vi's earshot.
"Why can't people mind their own business?"
Vi thought, putting her fork down and holding her head in her hands, leaning on the table. Despite her thought, she already knew why people were talking about it. Prison was boring, and everyone just saw a free show that gave them some entertainment. Vi will be the main topic of everyone's conversation for weeks, and she couldn't stand it. This whole time she's been in prison, she's kept to herself to avoid this exact situation, and after just one careless act, shes now the talk of the prison. If the higher ups didn't know about what happened this morning, they'd find out if they even got close to the refectory.
Dina noticed Vi's distress as she held her head in her hands. In another attemot to comfort her, she reached out. But as soon as she did, Vi shot up from her seat and quickly left the room, unable to deal with the situation anymore. Just as Dina got up to chase after her lover, a hand reached out and grabbed her arm
"Give her some space, she hasn't got it easy"
A female voice said. When she turned to see who it was. the C.O Dina had done her first job for stood before her. Dina frowned at the C.O before pulling her arm away
"You don't know Vi"
She said, running out of the room and leaving half empty food trays behind.
As she walked back to her cell, Dina could hear the sounds of punches landing on a concrete wall. Knowing exactly what the cause of the sound was, she walked slowly towards the cell, before entering quietly and taking a seat on her own bunk. Maybe the C.O was right, The way Vi showed rage behind each punch proved she needed some time to get her anger out. For a few minutes, Dina stayed quiet, until the loud buzz that signalled the end of the dinner period went off. As the cell doors locked shut, Dina remained silent, waiting for Vi to talk to her when she was ready, but she waited a while.
"Vi?"
She asked calmly, when she didn't earn more than a grunt in response, she took it as a hint to give her lover some more time to calm down. The C.O was right, this can't be easy for Vi. In just one day, she saw one of the people from the memories that haunted her, put a target on her back with the C.O's, and became the talk of the prison. People will know that she's in deep trouble, and some might even try to take advantage, so her anger made a lot of sense to Dina.
The only thing Dina could hear was the continuous sound of Vi slamming her fists into the concrete wall, she had grown used to it until she heard a set of footsteps walk down the hallway. Fear consumed her immediately as her posture became stiff. As the footsteps slowed as they neared their cell, the realisation of Dina being powerless to Vi's consequences hit her. It was a public act, so she couldn't take the heat for her lover this time. As she looked at the cell door like a deer caught in headlights, fearing what was coming next, a rather tall blue-haired woman came into view.
Having heard the appraching footsteps herself, Vi let her hands fall to her side and turned around, not expecting to be met with someone she had never seen before. Given her popularity at the prison, she knew just about every guard that worked there, but she didn't recognise the woman that stood before her in an enforcers uniform that did nothing for her slender figure.
"Who the hell are you?"
She asked, beads of sweat dripping down her face from her previous activity. Dina looked between the enforcer and her lover in confusion, this isn't what she thought was going to happen.
