Esme
I walk into the kitchen and finally find the root of all the noise echoing throughout the house. Theya quietly stirs something in the pot with a wooden spoon, while Genesis, Aubrie, and Delilah argue.
Brie picks up the glass jar of red sauce from the counter, and starts to read off the ingredients list. Leaning on the wall next to me, I kick one foot over the other, and listen.
"This sauce contains forty two percent water, thirteen percent sunflower oil, four percent carrot puree, preservatives- I mean do I have to continue? We are not using this, I'll show you how to make it from scratch." She lectures them, and Genesis rolls her eyes.
"We don't have time to make the sauce from scratch. Mae will be up soon, and she will be hungry. Give it to me." Gen reaches for the sauce, but Aubrie moves it over her head before she can grab it.
Their height difference has never been as noticeable as it is right now. I try to hide my laughter behind my hand and keep quiet, but the more Gen jumps, the harder it is.
Delilah looks over at me when she hears me, and rushes over. She squeezes between Brie and the stove to reach me, and smiles triumphantly when she does.
"It was Gee's idea to make your favorite- mezze penne bolognese- and Aubrie insists on making it from scratch. She wants to use Stefanos grandmother's recipe." Delilah explains, but my attention is drawn to the giant basketball strapped to her stomach.
"My goodness, she's gotten bigger since I've left." I tell her, but she shakes her head, clearly disagreeing with me.
"No, I'm getting big, she's only the size of a corn." I bite the inside of my cheek to keep myself from laughing at her analogy, and switch my attention back to my sister and Aubrie.
Bella starts crying from somewhere in the house, and Aubrie stops arguing immediately.
"Can I get her for you?" I offer, and she smiles appreciatively.
"You know how to hold a baby?" Theya randomly asks, and I roll my eyes at her insinuating tone.
"No, not exactly, but I wanna try."
"Yes, please. Thank you. She's in the sitting room. Please don't forget to support her head and neck." Aubrie says, and I repeat that information over and over in my head.
Following her cries, I find a semi red faced Bella in her bassinet, and my heart clenches. I pick her up gently, making sure to do what Aubrie said, and she stops crying. Bella opens her eyes, and in a weird way, it feels as if she is staring into my soul. I gently rock her, and she whimpers. I run hand around the perimeter of her face, and she holds onto my finger with her small hand.
The hairs at the base of my neck stand up, and before I can panic, I get a whiff of Silas's scent, and relax.
Silas comes up behind me, and wraps an arm around my waist. Looking up at him, my eyes run over his face, trying to gauge his out what he's thinking.
