Esme
Folding and discarding the last box, I lean it against the wall with the rest of them, and stand back up to my full height. My shoulders sag in relief as I realize I'm finally done moving. I still can't believe Silas convinced me to do this.
This week has been the longest ever, I need to be on a beach, with no one but my family there.
Flashback
Delilah, Theya, and I all rear our heads back at Silas's last statement.
"Silas, there is no way we're moving in. Are you crazy?" The man's face is almost always stoic, but he breaks character when he visibly winces at my question.
"Can you two give us a minute?" I ask, and Delilah and Theya nod their heads before exiting the living room side by side in silence.
As if the temperature goes up in the room once they leave, I inhale deeply and roll my shoulders back in an attempt to calm myself down. Silas sits down beside me and stares at the side of my face.
"Esme, they were in your house. They hurt De-"
"And if I wasn't with you, that never would have happened." He winces again, and when he opens his eyes, they're full of hurt. "You think moving in with you will make it better?"
Silas immediately nods his head, confident that living under one roof will keep us safe. "I do. You will." He reiterates, but I don't agree.
"Don't take this the wrong way," His eyes soften, and I look away in regret of what I'm going to say next. "We have only know each other for two months, I-"
The temperature feels like the thermostat is broken, but first it was set to the highest temperature. "Don't give me that bulls- Esme you don't get to do that."
Furrowing my brows, I move closer to him to look in his eyes. "Do what?"
"Give me one good reason to stay here?" The request is a significant one, but if he can't answer it, then I don't need to be moving in with him.
The question has a double meaning, and Silas knows what both of them are. The silence in the living room envelops us like a tight blanket and all of a sudden my eyes are stinging.
I know he likes me, it's very clear given that he's asking me to move in with him just to keep me safe, but I want to hear the words from him. Not keep dancing around maybe yes's and maybe no's.
Ugh, I sound like a girl off television.
A hand nearing my face breaks me out of my thoughts, and when I feel Silas's rough but warm hand cradling my head, I reluctantly lean into it.
"Because I care for you and-" he inhales sharply "and because I find myself wanting to spend every moment in your presence."
Well damn.
