Silas

"Hi Aunt Mae." Alessia greets with a wide grin when May comes to a stop at knee level in the water.

When Alessia reaches out for Esme, she takes her into her own arms without hesitation, and I watch them with a weird feeling blooming deep inside my chest.

Pops always explained to me how rare it was to find love in our world, and when I found it, I should hold on, and never let go.

Once I realized that I'd found that with Esme, a terrifying feeling washed over me. If she didn't love me back, how would I go on?

Despite us only meeting a few months ago, Esme truly has embedded herself in every bit of me, and now holds my heart in the palm of her hands. The thought of her not wanting it, or crushing it, made me want to vomit.

I've never been one to willingly make myself vulnerable, but with Esme how could I not?

"Silas!"

"Uncle Silas!" The two of them yell at the same time, taking me away from my mixed thoughts.

"Silas?" Esme sets Alessia down, then reaches up to hold my face.

"Nothings wrong, I'm just still in shock that you actually feel the same way about me, as I do you." She stares into my eyes, looking for a flicker of a lie, but gives me a shaky smile when she doesn't find a single one.

    "As do I."

I never realized how old I actually am until I chased a four year old around in the ocean. Alessia is small, but mighty. Keeping up with her is a real task. "I'm gonna go sit down."

Theya walks beside me and we sit in the chairs provided by the crew. Telling by the goofy smile on her face, I'll say Sean finally worked up the nerve to ask her to be his. "He asked you?" I question, and she hums.

"It's crazy that he thought it would mess up our friendship. I mean, it was never really a friendship, more so like a friends with-" I put my hand up to stop her before she tells me too much.

I do not want to know what teenagers get up to these days.

"I think I got the picture." I tell her, and she looks away, giggling.

"I'm just happy I finally told him the truth. It was hard keeping my feelings bottled up like that." I understand exactly what she means, but I just nod, not wanting to delve into my feelings with her.

...

"Mrs. Rucci, would you like to go back now or later?" The waiter asks Aubrie now that we've finished our lunch. The spread was nothing short of delicious.

"Um, let me ask one moment." She replies, and I continue running my hand up and down Esme's back as she sleeps. According to her, she's in a food coma.

"Should we head back now or later?" Aubrie asks everyone, and we all agree to head back now.
