They all arrived back at the same moment, just as they were supposed to... Well, all of them, except one.
There was a gap between Steve and Clint that wasn't suppose to be there.
None of them, besides Clint, had realized this yet though, too wrapped up in the disbelief and excitement of actually succeeding, to notice.
"Did we get 'em all?" Bruce asked as their time travel suits disappeared.
"Are you telling me this actually worked?" Rhodey laughed in disbelief.
Lexie was about to respond, when Clint fell to his knees, and her smile faded.
"Clint, where's Nat?" Bruce asked.
Clint didn't reply and they all understood.
Natasha Romanoff was dead.
Lexie teared up and shook her head in denial, her body drained of the euphoric feeling from only moments before, replaced with overwhelming numbness and a buzzing in her ears.
For the first time in her entire life, she felt utterly destroyed. The loss five years ago had been devastating and had left her feeling defeated and broken, but she'd still had some people left. She'd still had Natasha, who was the one she'd known the longest. The one who had been there before any of the others had entered the picture. That loss had been painful, but with help, she'd been able to rebuild herself, piece by piece. The loss of Natasha though... It was as if Lexies entire life was a Jenga tower, that since she'd been born, had had piece after piece removed. Even though she became more and more unsteady over the years, she'd managed to remain standing throughout everything, she'd even put some pieces back in place, and not break completely. Now, it was like the final piece needed to make it all fall apart was finally removed.
Now, she was left feeling completely lost and unable to see which way would lead her home.

Some time later, the original Avengers - well, the ones left at least - were down on the docks by the lake next to the Compound.
"Do we know if she had a family?" Tony asked quietly.
"Yeah," Steve nodded sadly. "Us."
"What?" Thor asked, somewhat angrily.
Tony looked at him in confusion. "Huh?"
"What are you doing?"
"Just asked him a question."
"Yeah, no, you're acting like she's dead. Why are we acting like she's dead? We have the stones, right? As long as we have the stones..." his voice quivered, "Cap, we can bring her back. Isn't that right? So, stop this shit," he spoke angrily again. "We're the Avengers. Get it together."
