303 AC, Stark-Targaryen Camp, Crownlands
It felt weird to be so close to King's Landing for the first time in so many years. It may not have been where he was born, and during his youth he had preferred to spend as much time as possible far away from the wretched city, but it was still his home. And it was a special place to his House, much like Dragonstone.
Dragonstone was the original seat of House Targaryen and had been in their position since the days of Old Valyria. Valyrians had colonised the island and built the stronghold there two centuries before the Doom and it had become the westernmost outpost of the Valyrian Freehold.
It was the place that Aenar Targaryen relocated his family and dragons twelve years before the Doom when his daughter, Daenys the Dreamer, predicted the destruction of the Valyrian Freehold.
The castle symbolised the Targaryens arrival to Westeros; and showed their Valyrian heritage since the towers had been shaped by Valyrian magic in the shape of dragons. But while Dragonstone represented their heritage, King's Landing and the Iron Throne was a symbol for the Targaryen Dynasty and they united the Seven Kingdoms under one thing; a Targaryen King.
During the years before Aegon's Conquest the lands that now was known as King's Landing had just been hills and woods that was claimed by more than one ruler since the Storm King, Argilac Durrandon, and the King of the Isles and the Rivers, Harren Hoare of Harrenhal saw the land as its own.
It wasn't that there had never been any civilisation in the lands before. No, towers and forts had been built upon the three hills many times and they had been destroyed by the many wars that plagued the divided kingdoms.
So when Aegon Targaryen landed on the north bank of Blackwater Rush alongside his army, two years before the conquest, the land was crowned by broken towers and overgrown ruins. The only people who lived their were fishermen that lived in a small village that was the size of an ant compared to the elephant of a city that stood there today.
On these lands, on top of the highest hill, Aegon the Conqueror had built his first fortress of wood and earth that they later called Aegonfort. But he did not get to stay in his newly built fort for long because the years that followed was plagued by battles and wars as he forced the many Westerosi Kings to their knees.
Once everyone but Dorne had been forced to give up their crowns, and the conquest was finalised, Aegon was crowned King of the Seven Kingdoms. And while many believed that the new King would choose his family seat, Dragonstone, or the largest city in Westeros, Oldtown, as his capital.
Instead he decided to build a new capital around Aegonfort that was built to surpass both Oldtown and Lannisport when it was finished. And it was inside Aegonsfort that the Iron Throne was built from the swords of his enemies; establishing a dynasty that lasted for almost three centuries.
